It's interesting that the villain!Hürrem narrative which is shown to be the public opinion here is so different from the reality of what we see of Hürrem as a character. Because although she has done some pretty terrible things (including her role in Mustafa's death), she's a far more complex character than reducing her to this would allow for. But this narrative is most of what the public are going to know her for. Also, how the women view her in episode 134 is extremely telling. Because they have a far more positive perception of her.

It really did remind me of when Hürrem decided to host the women of various charities in the harem where a group of them gossip that, while people may try to label Hürrem a witch, it's clear that woman such as her wouldn't have to resort to tricks rather than what's naturally hers.

I have to say, even though Hurrem sultan has a controversial reputation among the Turkish population, she actually did some great things too, helped build “hostels” for Muslim pilgrims, and helped the lower groups of society. Of course that many blamed her and rüstem for mustafa’s death, but that’s for the historians to decide. She set the stage to the era of the “Sultanate of Woman” which gave the stage to some of the most powerful women in history like Safia and Kosem sultan. Her portrait in the show is really good, both by Maryam and Vahida. You can like her or not, but her seal on the world needs to be respected.

They all talked about how Hürrem was threatened and had to protect her children and that the difference between hurrem and Mustafas mother and most talked about wanting one of hurrems kids. Also most Turkish and English comments sympathise with Mustafa and have some praise for him. But they also loved beyazit and wanted him as the leader and some understood Selims point and how him being mistreated led to this. However many Turkish comments also talked about the evil of Mustafas mother and how Hürrem had to protect her children from Mustafa Winning

Only from Fatma Sultan and in the coffee shop does Suleyman hear the people’s opinion about his first infanticide, straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. And he didn’t prohibit coffee; the first to do so was his grandson Murad III and later on his great-great-grandson, Murad IV. Suleyman in his old age prohibited wine drinking openly as ‘that red, mad thing’. Ultimate irony that Selim II was known to be a heavy drinker (sarhoz). Ha! The grand vizier had to conduct a full inspection of the different markets EVERY Wednesday, to check that regulations were observed, as did the chief officer of the sultan in every single town. The Osmanli state never became a capitalist country, not even an industrial one, and with inflation and the capitulations granted by the sultans, beginning with Suleyman and the French, Venetians ended up buying pepper from the Dutch and the Portuguese! More loss of income for the state, devaluation of the currency, increasingly burdensome taxation, ending with its dissolution after WWI.

After a certain point it become exhausting, Hurrem has to fight for her life against the family she's married into from the beginning until the end. It would seem as if her life was miserable, not one once of peace just constant fighting. She had to fight for life and that of her kids but she also killed or sent innocents to their deaths. And how was she not happy ? She had many happy moments in the series including her kids. The Harem has a mix of women, allegedly Suleiman was faithful to her but that is what history says who knows what really happened. I think it comes across as flimsier in the show as we've essentially "grown up" with these characters via watching their stories grow, but the reality of it all was that, in the end, Suleiman's reasons for executing Mustafa aren't actually flimsy at all. You won't hear me calling it justified, but, if the accusations weren't built on such solid, realistic "rationales" of the time, Mustafa wouldn't have fallen in the first place.

@@Redluna32 I don't see suspicion as a legitimate defence though. Yes, Suleiman was wary of the support for Mustafa, but, where was the evidence he was about to overthrow him? Being a favourite of the Army, people and the Ministers isn't a crime. They felt that Mustafa could best serve the Empire. He was more than about himself and self preservation. I mean...look at the bias. Mehmet was also a "favourite" but Suleiman never gave it a second thought that Mehmet would overthrow him. I mean it's possible..Suleiman was relatively unguarded against Mehmet. The difference just was Hurrem. She manipulated Suleiman, and created the circumstances, she effectively used Suleiman's hands to kill Mustafa. Her method took years for Mustafa's death to occur but it did occur due to Hurrem. Portraits for Muslim culture was/is rare and the general population didn't see the sultan daily. He would usually be in the castle. Soldiers or pashas and such may recognize him, but everyday townspeople likely would not. Especially so underdressed

This might seem a little weird, but cameras and photos weren't around back then 😱So unless you saw someone personally, you wouldn't know who they are

As people have already pointed out, in an age before news broadcasts and the like, it was actually very, very rare to actually *see* the person who ruled over you. It was, in part, why some rulers such as Suleiman's contemporary, Henry VIII, would go on progress through his own country.
