Though I’ve been back from New York City for just over a month now, my heart (and stomach) are still stuck there! So I’m continuing my series of recipes inspired by NYC’s best dessert shops and bakeries, and I’m excited to present to you this copycat recipe for Magnolia Bakery’s famous, fluffy and whipped original banana pudding! Magnolia has confirmed their banana pudding has gelatin in it, so my recipe is a great reference for anyone who'd like to keep it halal!

Made this and it turned out so well! My boyfriend loves it, although I would up the sugar just a teeny bit for my personal taste and add vanilla to the whipped cream as well 😊 thanks for a lovely video and recipe

I'm making this today using this recipe, and I automatically added more sugar, because I grew up making banana pudding the southern way, and the sugar is key it gotta be sweet, when you add the whipped cream we must add more sugar due to that, because heavy cream by it's self is not sweet. I will also add some sugar to the whipped cream also, because that will thin out the sugar on the custard. I will be adding more bananas as well, because we just tossed them in there until the cookie layer is completely covered, and cover the bananas with the cookies until it's completely covered, but we must always make sure we have enough custard to cover everything. I am excited to try this today, because I love banana pudding!!

Just made this and I can’t thank you enough. It’s not overtly sweet, and it was relatively easy to make. Rich flavor with just the right amount of texture.

Thank you for the recipe I made this for Eid I did a double batch and made one with the bananas and another without banana and put a drizzle of caramel in its place and everyone loved it alhumdulilah mashallah such an amazing recipe I live in the uk and we don’t have nila cookies so I had to make some from scratch but was deffo worth it 100% recommend everyone try this recipe out you won’t be disappointed and I can’t wait to try out some more of your recipes

ALTERNATIVES FOR THE NILLA WAFERS: • tea biscuit cookies like Parle G • graham crackers • shortbread cookies • danish tea cookies • oreos • sheet cake (including red velvet) If you choose a substitute that's already soft such as the cake crumbles, you can chill the pudding in the fridge for less than 4 hours before serving.

@@natashapachisia1075 Oh yikes, I haven't made pudding without egg. This might sound odd but you can try mashing ripe banana into the flour/sugar/milk mix AFTER it has thickened on the double boiler. Use an immersion blender to get a smoooooth texture. Chill that pudding mix and then proceed with making whipped cream and folding it in. It'll be even more banana-y flavored! 😍

@@snehalkarnad3348 I worry this would affect the taste of the pudding, though. If you're referring to replacing the whipped cream with whipped aquafaba (canned chickpea water) then yes that will work!!!

this looks so good im going to try it soon. the only criticism i would have is that the original magnolia's looks more yellow in color (i think they add more vanilla pudding).

Thanks for the video. For me, the egg yolk when put into the double heater setup forms small clumps that never go away. Maybe the temp is too high? Or I can filter it?

Try to add the milk very slowly, creating a paste at first and then adding more until it's all fully incorporated. But yes if it's already done and clumped, you can sift those clumps out!

You could offer use cornstarch instead of flour to thicken it up to when I do is I take three bananas put them in the oven for about 10 minutes take them out of the oven wait until they cool down add the bananas to the custard I start whisking it up then I put the vanilla wafers on the bottom and I start cutting up more bananas add to it to give it that really banana tea tasteyou could use whipped cream or make your own meringue to then stick it in the refrigerator for 5 hours

how many minutes the pudding needs to go into refrigerator before mixing it to whip cream?

It depends on the container you chill it in, but about an hour. Just make sure it's no longer warm. Cool to the touch, ideally

Hi, your video is so greatt!!! Btw why do you use double boiler? Can i cook directly in the pot with low or medium heat by tempering the egg yolk?

Thank you so much! You could try direct heat and temper the eggs but I think an ultra slow and gentle cook on the pudding (with the flour too) helps keep the texture smooth without having to over whisk. It's definitely a slow cook method but works like a charm!

I made this for my best friend's bday using their recipe on their IG highlights and I wish they would've recommended folding the pudding instead of beating on low. I lost the whipped consistency 🙄 sigh. If she ever wants me to make it again I'll know better for next time. It's in the fridge as we speak lol.

Aww I'm so sorry for that. If you have any more heavy whipping cream, you *could* make some more thick-whipped cream and then fold it in when you serve it. Will It go wrong if I use whipping cream instead of heavy whipping cream since we dont have any in our country?

Unfortunately regular whipping cream likely will not have enough fat content to keep up its whipped form for as long as the heavy whipping cream. Do you have access to "heavy cream"? In the states, they label it heavy whipping cream but it's the same as heavy cream. However, if you cannot find it, you can definitely try with whipping cream to see if it whips up well. My concern would just be the whipped cream keeping its stiffness and not falling flat over time. I hope you can find something usable! 🙂

After layering with nilla wafers how long can we put it in the fridge and would it make the wafers really soggy if we make it a night before?

The minimum time for the wafers to begin becoming soft is 4 hours, but you can absolutely leave them in longer. The pudding is stored in the fridge anyway, so that is ideal. They can't really become "too" soggy unless your pudding was not properly whipped in the first place. Good luck!!

If you want more color, I would recommend adding extra egg yolk(s) to the pudding too. But yes you can decrease the total amount of whipped cream! If you're trying to mimic Magnolia Bakery's pudding, don't use less than 1½ cups because the texture of their pudding is quite whippy 🤗

I’m trying this recipe and my whipped cream wasn’t coming out whipped enough it was too loose and not thick so I put it in the fridge. I’m not really sure what I did wrong

Make sure it is heavy whipping cream (more fat content) and you do have to beat it for quite some time. A chilled bowl and beater-whisks definitely helps. Try again after it has chilled in the fridge for ~15min. Warm weather can affect how quickly it whips up too

@@angellover02171 it depends. Instant pudding usually NEVER has gelatin because it uses cornstarch or some other thickening powder, and gelatin usually used for clear jelly.

Good attempt. But it is still not as creamy looking as magnolia’s pudding is. U should have added more creamy thing in it.

Are we talking about the same Magnolia? 😅 This pudding is quite creamy and quite similar to the original (as you can tell from all the comments and positive feedback). Give it a try and make adjustments as you see fit! 🤗

Thanks for the recipe! I tried the official Magnolia Bakery recipe first but it was too sweet for my liking and it came out more pudding like than whipped. That’s a problem that a lot of people have had when following that recipe. I just made your recipe (1/3 of its portion for just my household lol) and it came out great!! I tried this recipe and it was sooo good!!! Had to resist not eating it while waiting for it to chill overnight haha, but I love how you didn’t use instant pudding unlike the other recipes for banana pudding. Thank you! ☺️

😂 Believe it or not, these were my thoughts exactly when I saw how they make it. They could potentially put banana flavoring in their pudding, who knows! This is just an easy way to make it at home with minimal artificial flavoring 🙂 Thanks for watching and for the compliment on my art!

I'll have to try this one. I've tried the the original Magnolia's Famous Banana Pudding recipe..which uses vanilla pudding mix, condensed milk, ice cold water, heavy cream and vanilla wafers...surprisingly it is good. Banana Pudding is my all time favorite, so I'm always trying different recipes.

@استغفر الله اللهم صلي وسلم على محمد There are at least two different versions that people refer to as southern style. One is a custard type that has meringue on top. There is also an instant pudding that has cool whip or whipped cream type topping. The second one here is generally thought of as a cold banana pudding. The custard one is cooked and the meringue on top is baked or browned in the oven. Both versions generally use the Nilla wafers in them. Though, I've seen some made using shortbread cookies instead of the nilla wafers. The recipe in the video seems to be a mix of the two. While they cooked the custard but then added it to whipped cream and stored in the fridge. This one is quite interesting. I've never seen one made like this. It looks yummy, though. It's been my experience as a southerner that most folks prefer one over the other. My dad will not eat the cold pudding type ones, but the cooked kind is his very favorite dessert. I personally don't care for the cooked kind but I might try this one. 😊👍

Made this yesterday night and just tasted it. Amazing! I can't find that wafer in my country but there's a biscuit that look the same called 'biskut telur'. I used that and it goes well with the pudding. I used whole egg and reduced the sugar and combined everything in a saucepan before stirring it with low heat

@@ghinazharifah6638 I just looked it up online, and biskuit telur looks perfect as a substitute for the Nilla wafers! No the egg does not flavor the pudding, as there is also milk, vanilla, sugar, and banana all working together. Enjoy!!

To ensure the best results follow the techniques for making a creme anglaise. The double boiler will take longer and you will mostly likely end up with lumps and curdled eggs yolks. So tempur your yolks. Also completely fold in the pudding into your whipped cream by hand. Finally the pan measurements are off use a pan half the size or double the recipe. Though I love magnolias nothing compares to the homemade version.

The pudding (pre mix) for maybe an hour, depends on the container you put it in to allow it to chill (I recommend a shallow and wide container). The mixed final pudding result?? At least 4 hours

It loses its volume! I think the density of the pudding weighs down the whipped cream. Unfortunately I speak from experience 😂 I've had it happen to me twice when I was too impatient to fold and mix by hand
