This was magnum as it was originally designed and clearly some one of its earliest runs. No padding on the seats. Up stop skids instead of wheels. Zero trims. A much deeper start into the pretzel. Wow. Not many got to experience it like it was those first few weeks in May 1989. How they got a film running video recorded mounted that steady that close to the track is mind blowing as well.

If you want a trimless ride, be one of the first trains of the day. The trims are turned off if trains are less then half full. Weather conditions can also cause Magnum rides to be trimless. It's so much fun! This video shows the old pretzel design. During the 93 - 94 off season the pretzel was replaced with a track with a thicker track spine to increase durability and decrease stress . The drop leading into the pretzel was also raised and the trim brake was added.
@visionist76 жыл бұрын
Did the thicker pretzel spine possibly neuter Arrow's famous "slingshot effect" felt when whipping around their turnarounds on this and other rides like Viper at Magic Mountain? Before Viper's turnaround support columns after the drop were reinforced, the sensation was of the columns bending out and elastically forcing the train round the curve, almost like the train wanting to leave the track but the columns slingshot pushing it back again. I guess with the added pretzel trims Magnum wouldn't feel this way regardless...

Wow, before the trim brakes were added midway. I think that lasted about 1 year, maybe two.

Test riding that beast before it opened to the public was brutal. Then we still had to ride it several times every morning. OH the bruises !

Yes this was promo footage that ch. 13 got in fall of 89 when i was interning there. This was originally a umatic 3/4" dubbed to 1/2" vhs and then I transferred to dvd along with the damien footage.

Felice Graziano if you haven’t been or ridden Magnum yet, DO NOT ride in the back half of the train. Will be a very unpleasant experience, at least it was for me.

@ryanhorvath44764 жыл бұрын
Rhett Krecic I always ride in the back row on Magnum. You get whipped down the first hill!! With that said it does a real number on your thighs. You do pay for it but you feel better in a few hours lol!!
@firewalk1311 жыл бұрын
I second this, trimless rides are quite possible. I'm rather glad they fixed the drop before the pretzel because that does look a bit brutal in the original video. Really I love that you get some weightlessness and major ejector air on the same ride. Where you sit makes a big difference. I prefer the 3rd row of the first car. whee!

Wow! I wonder how different the ride experience was without the trims before the pretzel turnaround.

Sweet! I have it on good authority they've had to replace parts of the pretzel turn because trim breaks being off too many times when they should've been on. I rode it (13) times in a row during an ERT with them off. Probably (18) times total. It is shall we say faster : I don't remember it being too violent on the bunny hills if you tighten the seat belt and leave the lap bar loose. You have to press your feet against the front and lean back going into the brakes after the tunnel. I do that on Gemini's helix. If you don't ride it often it can be brutal. I crushed a pair of cheap sunglasses in cargo pocket once. We had a Pepsi cup thrown at us from under the camera. There's an on-ride pic of a lady almost hit by a seagull :

it was awesome without the trim breaks but if you sat in the back seat when you came down from the 3rd hill the lap bar hurt your thighs but still it was great
