similar experience on two occasions and two different systems. My elk humerus looked all shattered after getting hit and it only went 10 inches with 650 at 46 yards. Another system of 550 grains didnt get full pass through through the base of the neck and through the front shoulder.

Nice. One of the "tricks" here is compilation of multiple data points. Then you analyze the data and look at the trends. That's why Ed's study is quite solid. 5,000 impacts, tremendous amount of arrow systems, then you look at what the trends show.

I have not read all the Ashby reports yet. Did he or anyone else compare a curved convex versus straight triangular broadheads? I can see why a curved convex broadhead would be advantageous with stone points and primitive gear as it would give you a bit of tuning forgiveness and improve the FOC without increasing the thickness of the point. But the advantages of a convex steel broadhead with modern equipment are not as immediately obvious to me.

@EdAshby Since good design is about balancing and compromising competing features, not maximizing one feature at the expense of all others, what is the purpose of all these convex broadheads? Unless they are designed to just look cool, I assume there must be some benefit to a convex broadhead to justify the reduction in Mechanical Advantage.

Was it not a pass through just because it was 100 grains too light? What if he was shooting 70lb or 75lb with the same arrow weight? Could he pass through with more poundage and the same "light" weight?

The answer is We don't know. That bow is 60#. You can't assume. Because to replicate that shot, we need a new pig Same size Hit in exactly the same spot. If the pig moves differently than that one did - and it did jump the string. We don't know. A dead pig, test shot, that doesn't move. Still don't know. This is why I have a test lab. I don't hunt. I test in real live hunting situations with ALL THE VARIABLES. Not like the gel and foam folks who say. "we want a consistent target for consistent results" illogical. The animals aren't consistent and that's what we hunt. As noted in video. I said "I think its because of the low mass, I didn't say "I know".... Because we don't.

I think you are dead on troy that there wasnt enough mass to push it through. Now take everything I write with a grain of salt as I never put an arrow on any game even though ive been hunting for 30 years. I think theres a few factors going on here but from the looks of it first being magnus construction. Their single bevel looks like it spreads that intial cutting patch over a few millimeters and although this is fine for 90 percent of shots because it whacked that bone I think it dulled it just enough to make that initial cutting edge even larger along the blade SIngles like the tuffheads use that tanto tip and focus all that initial enrgy in a singular point and that tanto tip allows it to concentratrate all its force on that tip and then use the single bevel as a tool to move the pieces of bone out of the way. I also think that because magnus is not a single machined piece some of the force gets sucked into the screw and ferrule (weird stuff happens at velocity as you know) and that could be enough to take some of the momentum out of it. This is why tanks use a subcaliber DU projectiles to force all their velocity to a single point and the DU allows it to "Self-sharpen" to penetrate further. Im hoping this fall to take my son out with his crossbow and a High FOC setup and me with my cheap amazon $200 bow shooting some logs andharvesting my first and his first with a bow. I would like to consider myself an experienced rifle hunter but I gave it up a couple years ago after my father passed so im hoping to start something new with my 10 yo son. I am a busy guy I have a strict wife and young kids so if I were to get out 5 full days a year I would be lucky. In the past 25-30 years ive probably seen about a dozen bucks and does wounded with bad flapper/doink shots when Ive been in the woods rifle hunting and on my property. I swore I wouldnt go bow hunting (even though I enjoy shooting a bow) until someone figured out the lethality problem and I really think Dr. Ashby and RF is a godsend to people like me that care about one thing and thats lethality. So I would rather have a less cool perfect shooting $500 setup with arrows and broadheads and have meat in the freezer rather than spending my sons basketball game tracking and looking for bambi in the cold on a shot that should have been a kill shot. Plus the good thing about being new to this world you can get advice from someone like RF and say damn "Why didnt I think of that" and then wonder why all the big bowhunting PF give him crap because its simple conservation of energy. Im even taking it one step further and found products like FOB archeries fletching replacement, which I think will improve post fletching penetration performance by removing it altogether when it comes in contact with the animal. Like you guys always say "The Arrow is always Flying" so lets make it a little better at "flying" through meat by getting rid of the fletching.

1,000 is so awesome. Nothing stops it. I am going to cover the western concern over longer range shots and the massive (fact) reduction in ON TARGET energy below 550 grains later this year. Lab Radar data. My concern is elk are freaking big. To clarify, the pigs are NOT hunting. I leverage a 24/7 365 test animal population that is completely legal to shoot per state regulations to test different arrow platforms. It's a test lab. I DO KNOW FOR A FACT that shooting over 30 at pigs, which are always moving and notrious string jumpers, results in terrible outcomes. So it would be really hard to test 50 yards vs 15 with different arrow platforms and hit them clean and realistic. That sucks because I could do it. But they will just be hit poorly which doesn't do anything but prove they move a ton and the results don't help anyone. Elk and mule deer don't jump much. I suspect Coues deer are pretty wild though!!!! respect man, thank you.

Been sharpening knives 40 plus years. Father Fairy has drilled into my head super sharp broadheads. I don't think I could get a curved edge as sharp as a could a straight one. Kinda O.C.D like that. The science says: "For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction" - Newton. Meaning, the tissue would push back harder on the higher velocity but low mass object. 2nd. Drag equation. Velocity squares and increases drag (in the air and in tissues) but the projectile did NOT increase in mass. Science aside, we just don't know. We'd have to replicate that exact shot and hit and bone and arrow system with a 70# bow. That is exactly what Dr Ed would tell us to do.

@@RanchFairy I’ve done it many times. I’m lucky to have pigs to shoot year round also. Actually have them coming to within 40 yards of the back porch feeding on whiteoaks at the moment. I get it Troy. I’ve done light and heavy. Each setup has its benefits. For “me” the single best thing you have done is to shed light on the need to shoot razor sharpe, good quality heads. You mention your early years of archery. I bet if you had our Broadheads your results would have been different. Your shooting the best made heads bowhunting has ever seen out of a bow that was modern going on 30 years ago.( I started in 1999 so I shot solo cams) Why not use the best/efficient bow also? My 28”dl, 70lb, 368taw would have destroyed that little pig. I have 100% confidence I would have broken the off side shoulder and at a minimum my fletching would have gotten hung up. I enjoy what your doing and understand science is proven, I just think these modern heads close the gap on the past vs present.

And I admit this on video - podcasts, etc. so you win. I guess we only let bowhunters out in the field as long as they have perfect form. Instead of perfect arrow flight Sharpened durable broadheads That’s the impasse. Because I know my form isn’t perfect (whatever that means) I work really hard on EVERY single arrow I shoot to be bare shaft perfect. Which I actually can do. Pretty easily.
