We depart Audi Camp in Maun for the short journey into the Khwai concession where we stay at Magotho, Khwai Community Campsite. The campsite had no facilities at the time, but was full of adventure. We saw an abundance of game along the majestic Khwai river including lion, wild dog, honey badger, python, hippo, elephant, girraffe, waterbuck, kudu, impala, buffalo, warthog and stunning birdlife.
We stayed in Campsite 1 which had decent shade and grass - one night, we were privileged to experience a lion kill in our camp - it was extremely dark, too dark to record video of the kill as it woke us up, but the noise as they took a zebra down and dragged it into the bush, brought several vehicles to the grass next to our camp at first light.
We reluctantly left Magotho camp and headed to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, stopping at Makgadikgadi Pans National Park on the way, overnighting at Khumaga Camp.
In CKGR, we stayed at Lekhubu wild camp, with absolutely no facilities. We moved on to stay at Deception Pan campsite, which has a fire pit, pit toilet and shower enclosure. There is no water available at any of these camps, and no river to get water from. We had fewer sightings at CKGR but enjoyed the more arid terrain and extreme isolation. We did see jackel, lion, honey badger, springbok, gemsbok, warthog, bat eared fox, giraffe and a cape cobra!
