The bird in this video is a Eurasian Magpie. Thought I’d post this as I’ve noticed a lot of comments stating it’s not a magpie. It may not look like the magpies in your part of the world, but it is a magpie.

It's abit a lazy magpie (but also a lazy cat) usually the "dance" is really an act of an injured bird with one wing lose, quasi uncontrolled flapping and a reeling walk. But she looks quite familiar to a Swiss. The injured bird has a function it protects the breed, but i know they like to fool cats as a sort of game. I watched this show often as a child and was looking for a clip, yes it comes close.

@@googleyoflolz9930 They actually _do_ act like that. I've seen footage of a pair messing with a cat on some outbuilding roof; they clearly made a point of positioning themselves so the kitty would be plunging headfirst over the edge if it pounced at either of them. The cat recognised it too but holy shit you could see how it struggled to check the instinct to lunge at the lil' shits.

I remember a raven who visited us back when I was about 6, screaming at us to feed him at 6 am, and constantly pecking and biting away at the tail of our dog. One time that dog, a big German Shephard Rottweiler mix, decided to basically open his maw as wide as he could and just put it around the bird, telling him very clearly he isn't much more than a mouthful. Two days later, the raven was back at it. My dog told him "I could just eat you if you keep this up" and the bird took away from it "but you didn't! :)"

If they had a nest nearby it might have been a behaviour called mobbing. It's when a bird flies out from the nest (also several and also outside of brooding season) to pick on predators nearby and basically drive them away by blowing their cover and kinda literally calling them out, or actually attacking them.
@pawwalker3492
@pawwalker3492 Жыл бұрын
@@Mara_1337 could be. I'm not certain if there was any nests around as there really weren't any trees. ONE bird would sit on the top of the lamp post and the second either cat went out ... BOOM! I felt bad for our cats - one was 21 and the other was 19. They just wanted to sun themselves 😺😺

This is predator deterrence behaviour. They pick on cats, birds of prey etc. etc. specifically _because_ those are at least a potential threat to their lives and limbs and they'd very much like to see them leave the premises. Failing that they'll at least make damn sure the buggers know they're unwelcome and shouldn't cross them. Magpies are really already bigger than cats' preferred prey size range but they'll go for them if they're hungry and find an opportunity. I've seen a video of a feral cat that managed to catch one, presumably having managed to surprise the bird from the cover of the vegetation like a meter away. According to the uploader's description she was a hungry nursing female with a litter to feed, which was presumably why it went after such a relatively difficult target in the first place - beggars, choosers. (According to same the kitten litter later got eaten by a fox mind you; the food web is a harsh mistress.)

Hilarious. As soon as the cat starts to walk away the Magpie gets closer and cackles. It's more like the Magpie is tormenting the cat.

Perhaps the magpie has a young nearby. Noticed magpies doing this kind of behavior before when a young was nearby. They keep the cat distracted in the hope the cat doesn't notice the young or till the cat gets frustrated and leaves

Seen two magpies tease car next door - cat was sat on the fence with a magpie either side, as it stalked one, the magpie behind would fly up and peck at the tail, then fly back cat turns its attention to that one, and so magpie now behind it repeats. Poor cat only lasted a few minutes then hopped off fence and settled down under outside bench

Once saw a cat lying in a yard, with 2 magpies on different sides of it screaming like crazy at it, not sure what led upto it, but it seemed weird with the cat beeing unphased.

one time I saw a magpie on a roof being dive bombed by a tiny starling. the starling was furious and dove straight at its head from the air from about two feet in the air while flying six or seven timesin a row like a videogame character on repeat and the magpie just sat there and sucked its head to bareley avoid it each time. it's like it was enjoying toying with it.

I once had a cat that was being teased by a blue jay. Not only would it do what this magpie was doing, but it would call out loudly and warn all other birds about the cat. Then, later in the week, I found a fresh blue jay carcass in the front hedging, the cat's favorite graveyard. He hadn't bothered to eat it. It may seem funny now, but sooner or later, the cat will pretend it's not interested, and will likely pretend for a long time. Sooner or later, the magpie will get distracted. Then it's curtains for the bird. My point is the cat can kill the bird, but the bird can't kill the cat. So, which one is being stupid?

@@centrasseptyni8277 Who's taking the risk just for sh*ts and grins? Also, cats are more capable and intelligent than you think. They're quiet, fast, shrewd, well-armed, and have a good sense of cover. Also, they have amazing hearing and smell, and they remember. A cat will lose against a hawk, eagle, or owl. Otherwise, I wouldn't bet your house on the bird. This isn't a roadrunner cartoon, and in real life, a coyote is twice as fast as a roadrunner.

I have the same situation in my garden. The cat and magpie, who hate each other. The cat wants to eat the magpie, and the magpie wants to annoy the hell out of the cat all the time, or just let him know that she sees him.
