Used to be stationed at the base in San Diego where they did the filming of Top Gun. My limited experience of the Aim-54/F-14 combo is that the kill range is ALSO dependent on the size/agility of the target plane. A large ungainly aircraft is a lot easier to splash at extreme range than, say, a Flanker (which I found the hardest). Conversely I found that the Aim-54 is incredibly useful against small targets that cannot dodge like Shipwreck missiles. It makes sense if you think about it, mate. This is correct, though not really a problem. As mentioned the primary idea behind the Phoenix was to give a navy interceptor the ability to take down a large bomber or strike aircraft before they could get to weapons range with anti-ship cruse missiles. Extreme long range shots against fighter sized aircraft that pose little to no threat to the carrier group itself was never a major concern with the design. This is actually why there are very few real life in combat firings of the AIM-54, the target it was designed to kill never really presented itself and in most fighter engagements the AIM-7 and AIM-9 where more than sufficient.

@@llynellyn Yes, I read that the Iranians fired all of the Aim-54's that they bought, I believe quite a few at fighter sized targets. I can't remember the hit percentage though, I think it wasn't great because like Magz says they were designed to hit large non-evading targets like bombers. *I don't think* the USA ever fired them in combat due to their rules of engagement needing visual ID, so they pretty much always flew with Aim-7's and Aim-9's. Don't quote me on that though, I have a rusty memory. :-)

bolter means you need to go around after touching the deck, it includes wire break but that can also be hook skip (too low) or you simply were too high and went over all 4 wire. aircraft's AoA can also affect the result of hooking the wire even though you touchdown at the right area.

Awesome as always /) Just waiting for the first one to actually comply to the NATOPS - I've yet to see a DCS Tomcat take off without burners (I know it looks great) :D Also, Anti-Skid / Spoilers off on the deck :) One thing made me wonder though: You kept burning in full AB at ~36kft, but didn't even exceed M 1.05 after minutes which made me think this'd be a waste of fuel as she probably still goes M 0.9+ without... shouldn't the Cat go faster even with that loadout? What's the draggy thing? The 54s have special aerodynamic fairings in front of them, 9 and 7s shouldn't hit speed that much anyway especially since the latter are placed in recesses even at the glove stations. So, is it just the drop tanks? I know, Early Access and stuff, but asking early gets it fixed early in case it's off :) Did ED finally increase the font size of the comms a tad or do you have any kind of mod installed for that?

No, the Tomcat demands rudder work, without it you'll find yourself having quite a number of control issues especially in combat.

Phoenix could be launched by both but the RIO had to target it, which is what Jester did automatically when I issued the lock command and selected the Phoenix from the pilots position.

Yes, DCS modules have game modes in both FM and Avionics if you wish to use them. Unlimited ammo and fuel can be selected from the options menu as well. Honestly it's no way near as hard as people credit it for, It just takes time to learn it all.

Hard to do the Top gun intro parody or show off the night lighting and low light systems and the shadows/reflections and other lighting effects that only show up in low light conditions in the daylight which was the whole point of doing this flight in exactly the hours I did rather than 12pm noon in perfect lighting conditions the same as every other F-14 video at the moment.

in the f-14 how do you know the range of your enemy? is there info through the radar?

Well first, Jester/ you rio is here to tell you... then ... as all plane with radar screen lock, you know what max range you set... If 80Nm range and buddy is arround middle, you know that he is around 40Nm.... If you are 20 and he is top of the screen, you know he is 20 .... Etc ;) Work like this for mirage, F18 etc... But if you are questionning about having like in hornet, a display (on hud for hornet) or on radar screen/hud for mirage, that tell you exactly what range ennemy is.... Well... Remember you RIO is the one operating radar and u... in pilot seat, are just here to pull the trigger (not even sure u do for Phoenix..... I need to finish natops )

He actually has a realistic FOV and searches the sky like a human would, so it's not unfair. Also he can't call out targets when he is looking around in the cockpit doing stuff etc. A real RIO in the backseat with multicrew will still be more capable.

David Mason In a game? True. On a carrier? Never. The throttle stays where you put it. The stick is always held in case the cat fires early or something else happens. Control of the plane is his number one priority. I learned to be this nit picky from a friend who flew A-7s for 20 years and then F-16 for AFRES for another 10. Never watch an air combat movie with someone like that. They’ll destroy your ability to suspend disbelief in seconds. 😆

From what VLSO for FSX taught me, you should be at about 650 feet at 1 nautical mile on approach for the deck, and the meatball should have you at about an 8° glide slope at roughly 125 - 145kts (depends on your weight). Aiming the velocity vector slightly above and to the right of the 3rd wire. I've gotten about a dozen "OK" ratings from the LSO... But I wish DCS had an actual LSO to speak to you.

VLSO for FSX is got a few things wrong then. Break turn is at 800 feet. 500feet at 1nm Landing speed is 125 to 135 knots with 15 AOA units or 10.3 degrees AoA. Velocity vector and E-bracket on the HUD can be unreliable during landing do reliance on the ball and donuts is preferred by most pilots (apparently many real F-14 pilots used to turn the HUD off during landings due to this)

They kinda need it to be that way, So far I have been showing intercept missions but you configure Jester based on mission, so for example the options you will want selected for an intercept will be different from the options you will want for a bombing mission or a BARCAP. It's really not a major issue anyway, you can set him up in a matter of seconds once you get used to it and it gives you something to do while climbing out.
