Maha Kaalabhairavashtakam "Yam Yam Yam Yaksha roopam" Sridevi Nrithyalaya - Bharathanatyam Dance

'Mahakaalabhairava Ashtakam', also known as 'Theekshna Damshtrāshtakam', is a powerful hymn in which each verse begins with
Beeja Mantras such as 'yam', 'sam', 'pam', 'ram' etc.
'Beeja' (meaning 'seed') Mantras are the core Mantras
endowed with great powers, therefore should not be recited without initiation from a Guru.
This Ashtakam is a salutation to the Supreme deity, who is 'Kshetra Paala', the protector of Kshetra (region/domain/body).

Just when you think that the team at Sridevi Nrithyalaya has attained perfection, they show you that they can do perfection better than ever! The vibrant background with the ebony pillars that are carved ornately is reminiscent of the Trayambakeshwar temple, which is in fact Nasikabhooshani as it bejewels the city of Nashik! (pun intended) Even the girls dancing in a circle instead of facing the front, as usual, add to the effect of a temple performance as they resemble bhaktas gathered to sing hymns in praise of the lord. Meghna's presence was refreshing; I have seen great potential in her since her solo in Satyam Shivam Sundaram in 2022. The way her eyes danced with her was incredible- she reminded me of Koodiyattam performers that I had watched in A R Rahman's docu-series Harmony in 2018, for they too had similar depth and dimension in their eyes as her. Bhairavi's elegance, nobody can compare! The magnificence in her gait as her posture is straight and serious, as well as the subtle smile that she adorns, renders her appearance more benevolent and warm. Watching Mridula is such an otherworldly experience; her core strength is marvelous, the way she balanced on one foot while bending to the front was a feat only a few can do, and the way her eyes glared into the camera, they looked like two raging flames, encapsulating the raudra essence of the piece in themselves. Mrinalini's mudras are neatly delivered such that when her hands take the shape of various gestures, they resemble exotic flowers blossoming. Kameshweri's tremulations and wide-open eyes showed me how Bharatanatyam is such a versatile dance form that it can show goosebumps in the most interesting manner. Harinie akka resembles a wooden doll crafted by the artisans of India- her eyes open wider and her lips pursed to represent the anger of the lord are reminiscent of the painted dolls that are coloured in such a crafty manner that their expressions are deeper. Sanjena is grace personified, especially in the end as she stands majestically in the Kalabhairava pose, her shoulders straightened and her hands further apart making her body language appear more powerful. The music composition was ethereal! Embar Kannan sir is a magician. His selection of raagas and the thought process gone behind them, the veena and violin compositions that albeit challenging, were given due justice to Anjani ma'am and Kannan sir respectively. The singing was so clear and soulful, like a devoted priest was singing. Sheela ma'am, once again, you have set the standard high in Bharatanatyam!

Yes, Jains and Buddhists borrowed a lot from Vaidika Dharmam. Including aksharas that serve as beejas. But the meanings are very different: the usage, order and purpose of the Beeja aksharas are different across these religions. (Sikhs too insist that Ek Onkaar, which is a borrowing from Vaidika OMkaara beeja, is now different and refers to something else in Sikh religion than to the Vaidika Devas/Paramatma.) Jains as well as Buddhists also adopted and adapted the names and/or features of some Vaidika Devas and Kshetra palas, but they're not at all the same Devas and Palakas as in Vaidikam. These differences are quite paramount, which is why Buddhist teachers also make this clear. Therefore, please be aware not to conflate the different Indian religions, despite superficial similarities due to borrowings, but to respect the differences.
