I was 9 in 1961 when I first heard Miss Jackson. Unforgettable! Still love her so.

I remember the first time I heard her voice at the age of ten - “Holding My Savior’s Hand” - I have been enthralled by it ever since. I am grateful for Mahalia Jackson’s ministry and legacy til this day thirty years later.

I have great childhood memories of Miss Jackson’s music as well. My mother had a Christmas and greatest songs of Mahalia albums. Her singing has been with me all my life too. Pointing me to God. Reminding me of his goodness

Mom had her records and I used to listen to them growing up as a child but I think she died in the early 60s when I was little . She was very gifted !

I remember seeing her on Sullivan when I was a kid. She's awesome. And now that I'm a Christian (45 years!) she's even better.

This extraordinary soulful human was Aretha Franklin's inspiration! I'd highly recommend "Mahalia Jackson Newport Jazz Festival 1958" (video on KZbin). Amazing piece of footage.

I guess she had a much greater impact on the society with her music more than the Gathier Trio.
