You may not agree with how Tun M handles things but you cannot deny this man is a hell of a genius. How he placed Malaysia in the eyes of the world was impressive as hell. Wow clever. The countries that faced the economic crisis of 1997 at that time you see now. South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore that borrowed money from the IMF. Now have the highest GDP compared to Malaysia. South Korea, Indonesia are in the G20. The GDP of Singapore and Thailand is higher than Malaysia? If Malaysia follows the DSAI idea, I believe Malaysia can compete with Singapore and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. Now you see what it's like. After 1997, Malaysia's economy was one of the slowest to grow. If fast, we could have reached 500B$-700B$ GDP every year.

The countries of South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore that borrowed money from the IMF used to have the highest GDP compared to Malaysia. South Korea, Indonesia enter the G20. The GDP of Singapore and Thailand is higher than Malaysia? If Malaysia follows the DSAI idea, I believe Malaysia can compete with Singapore and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. The "rebound" had nothing to do with pegging the currency and capital control. If anything the level of protectionism and bureaucracy massively increased. The economy was "saved" from "foreign intervention" but fell into the hands of virtual monopolies controlled by the elite few. In fact with or without 1997 the Malaysian economy was a bubble waiting to burst. Consider that leading up to 1997 the Malaysian government, rather than taking preventive measures to ease speculation, did the opposite. Right before 1997 the scourge of the "2 ringgit companies" was in full effect, something Mahathir was fully aware of, but, depending on who you ask, did nothing or could do nothing. So I submit that rather than being a saviour, Mahathir was the one who held our economy back. He (and his family's various business interests) also had much to lose should proper governance and oversight have been put in place if Malaysia took the IMF's assistance.
