Sanskrit was the language that most books of knowledge were written in India in ancient time. It is like English in today's academic world. Most scriptures of Hinduism were also written in Sanskrit. Therefore, you see a lot of Sanskrit vocabulary in Hinduism being also used in Buddhism. Theravada Buddhists who claim that the Pali Canon is more closely related to the language spoken by Buddha are missing the point. It is not about which language is more closely related to what Buddha might have used (which is actually Prakrit). In fact, the ancient scriptures found in Afghanistan were also written in Sanskrit or a mixture of Sanskrit and Prakrit. Naturally, Mahayana scriptures that stress on the more philosophical side of Buddhism were written in Sanskrit because Sanskrit was supposed to be the more common language used by the more educated people in India, just like English in today's India. The Pali Canon was more well preserved (likely by the rulers) in Southeast Asia, I suppose, because of political reasons and hence they are more about rules and disciplines and much less about philosophy. Sanskrit was the official and more scientific written language in India. I doubt Pali as a language can match Sanskrit in terms of the multitude of philosophical concepts like Atman and Sunyata. It is a misconception that Mahayana texts are relatively newer than those in the Pali Canon. The Gandharan scripts found in Pakistan dated back to 1 CE was written in Gandhari which is closer to Sanskrit than Pali. The earliest existing Pali scripts that were preserved in Southeast Asia dated back to 5 CE. I don't know where you get your information from. You can do some google search to verify what I just wrote.
