Tama po yung deification pero iba po yung Amitabha at ang historical na Buddha. The historical Buddha is named Shakyamuni (i.e. Siddhartha Gotama). Later on, Mahayana followers introduced the idea of a celestial Buddha out there named Amitabha, whom Mahayanists claim was the one who sent Shayamuni to mankind. Isa po pala akong Theravada follower and I don't subscribe to the belief in Amitabha (and other Mahayana Buddhas like Vairochana etc) because Siddhartha Gotama did not mention them.

@@margiecatubay2200 Ang literal meaning kasi ng Mahayana is Great Vehicle sa original languange nya. Then ung Theravada (Hinayana) is a Lesser Vehicle.

@@margiecatubay2200 "Great Vehicle" was attributed by the Mahayanists to themselves, by elevating Mahayana above the Teaching of the Elders (called by Mahayanists as "Hinayana" or "Lesser Vehicle"). "Lesser Vehicle" was a derogatory term that Mahayanists call those who upheld the original teachings of the Buddha. The Hinayanists were outnumbered by the Mahayanists then because Mahayanists did not approve of the Buddha's teaching that only arhats (those who eradicated desires for greed, ignorance, and anger) are the only ones that can become enlightened. Mahayanists strongly denied that this was what the Buddha meant (though that really is what the Buddha taught). Mahayanists deviated from the truth of the Buddha's teachings and changed the goal into being Bodhisattva (a person who can be able to be a Buddha but delayed to be so in order to help first others - an innovation of Mahayana which was never a teaching of the Buddha).
