I stayed in Safdarjang Enclave during the horrendous Sikh riots in 1984. I had formed a small group of army to help and protect my locality. I was just 17 but I was politically quite aware. Had seen many of these rioters and local hoodlums who had come in from particular areas led by the ruling party political leaders of the locality. They were primarily using this opportunity to loot and burn the rest. We tried to stop as many groups as we could and thankfully we didn't have too many casualties in our block. But Delhi burned during those few days and I literally relived what might have happened during partition. Fear was writ on every face and all because a major political party refused to act. I can understand what Maheep must have gone through but I can never feel that sense of helplessness thousands of Sikhs felt during those days. My faith in humanity was crushed. My heartfelt sympathies to Maheep and my Sikh friends in Delhi who lost some of their loved ones. Sad part is, many of those rioters still roam free and the shameless ruling political party that undertook this pogrom never apologised for what happened.
