There is no explicit mention in the Quran that music is haram. There is no where written, so it means that it is not haram. But ofcourse, songs with innapropriate lyrics will be forbidden. Imam al Ghazali (i think that was his name) also reported several ahadith by which he proved that music is permitted. Additionally, Yusuf al Qardawi reported in one of his books that music is halal, but there are some certain conditions that make it haram, such as innapropriate lyrics which I mentioned above and lyrics which lead to sin.

@@BratShemi Ok, we can exclude that part but then again, hadith and the quran are the only reliable sources, but I haven't found any verse or hadith which condemns music. Moreover, I found this hadith: Narrates ‘A’ishah (rta): The Messenger (sws) of God came to my residence while two female singers were singing the songs of Bu‘ath.1 The Holy Prophet (sws) lay down and turned his face to the other side. Meanwhile Abu Bakr (rta) entered and [seeing the singers] rebuked me thus: ‘Satanic musical instruments in the presence of the Holy Prophet (sws)?’ On hearing this God’s Messenger (sws) turned towards him and said: ‘Let them [sing and rejoice]’. When Abu Bakr was engaged in some other business, I signaled to the girls [to go out] and they left. It was on the ‘Id day.2(Bukhari, No: 907) This shows that the Prophet (S) allowed singing music. Also I read that Prophet (s)'s wife Ayesha also enjoyed listening to music

Hadhrat Abu Maalik Ash'ari (radhiyallahu anhu) says that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say: "Most certainly, there will be in my Ummah people who will make lawful fornication, silk, liquor and musical instruments." (Bukhaari)
