An amazing work of music for a 19 year old genius, Gustav Mahler. After 39 years of choral and opera performance, this tops my "bucket" list for music I'd kill to perform in concert. Too bad the final movement, the "Wedding Feast" is not here and included because it is gripping and contains a fabulous fanfare that only Mahler (of maybe Wagner) could have written. The story is dark and Germanic. This piece deserves a hearing.

It was excellent experience to make the recording of the full version (3 parths) premiere of Das klagende Lied in Manchester's Bridgewater Hall as a part of the Halle Choir with Kent Nagano for Erato, 1998. Pity is not on KZbin.

If I wasn't familiar with this piece and someone played it for me, I would instantly believe Wagner wrote it. This is incredibly Wagnerian, which is interesting because Mahler in his symphonies most closely resembles Bruckner (in my opinion).

+Jordan Morris disagree strongly, real brucknerian tendencies didn't start showing up in Mahler until the 7th and especially present in the 9th and 10th, his early works are most indebt to Beethoven and Wagner

I think from a thematic standpoint, Mahler is most closely related to Bruckner. The 2nd is very Brucknerian in places. But Mahler in general is unlike anyone else and pulls from seemingly everyone. Structurally, I'd agree with you about Beethoven.

Mahler worked predominantly as a conductor, and he specialised in Wagner operas. He adored Wagner and Wagner was by far his greatest influence

I'm well aware of his Wagner influence as well and his history as a conductor. Bruckner and Wagner themselves are very closely related, with the primary differences being in what they composed and Wagner's use of leitmotifs. For almost solely those two reasons, my opinion has always been that Mahler was, in many regards "correcting" Bruckner. It's certainly an interesting discussion- Mahler's primary influence. There really is no right answer, and Mahler's style in itself is so varied it's tough to pin down what "Mahlerness" even is. You have tonality and orchestration similar to Bruckner/Wagner, but a structure at times that is very classical. I think that's what makes Mahler so unique- he wasn't as much concerned with creating his own style as he was in bringing the best of multiple styles together

Conducting Wagner may have influenced Mahler's approach to orchestration, but in terms of the music itself, I'd say his great influences were Beethoven and Schubert, and perhaps Berlioz (especially in his scherzo movements).

I have a score of Waldmaerchen with me while I listen for the first time. There are several oddities of scoring in it that I was looking forward to hearing, but it seems in this recording they were normalized out-there is a small part for a second tuba, but for example at 6:36, where the first tuba has falling octave motif echoing the trumpet and horn, and the second tuba has a B0 pedal point, the falling octave motif very much sounds like it's being played on a trombone. And there are a couple places where Mahler asks for extra vocal soloists in addition to the main four, but at 7:32, where he asks for two tenors, it sounds like we get the tenor and the bass, and at 12:32, where he asks for two basses in octaves, the upper octave is simply omitted. I understand that the tenor doesn't cover it because he has to come in with a separate line at 12:48, but...there is a whole section of basses who are resting at that point-surely one of them could have helped out? I bet this recording doesn't use the requested six harps, either. What I have is the critical edition. I didn't think there *were* any other editions since, if I'm not mistaken, Mahler cut Waldmaerchen before he made any revisions to Das Klagende Lied. I wonder if any of the other recording stays truer to the score.

+Alex Kindel Jurowski and the London Philharmonic have "only" three harps, but they do have the silly second tuba part and the extra vocal soloists. I can live with that.

The version you have is probably the very first edition, using an insanely huge orchestral apparatus, for which Mahler was heavily criticised and made fun of in famous Viennese satire magazines. I'm pretty sure it was after he had written his first symphony that he made major changes to the scoring, making it performable. All of this is quite similar to Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, isn't it?

I had the edition from the Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft, whatever that is. I'm not positive about the history involved, but I would be surprised if satire magazines ever criticized the Waldmaerchen in particular, because Mahler cut it from the piece before any of it was ever performed and, I believe, didn't see a concert stage until after his death. It was indeed quite far into his career when he dusted off Das Klagende Lied and prepared it for its first performance. He considered it wild and immature, and presented it to audiences as something of a historical curiosity.

I know it's a late reply but I am really curious where on earth did you find a score to Waldmaerchen? I've searched but always found nothing...

While this piece was finished in 1880, the first performance was on 1901 (and it was the 2 movement version; with the Waldmärchen removed) A seldom-known story regarding this piece is that Mahler sent a copy of the 1st movement to Liszt in hopes of a performance. However Liszt rejected it because "the text [of Waldmärchen] was not likely to bring the work success." So its likely that Mahler took Liszt's opinion seriously so he removed the Waldmärchen movement. Mahler also submitted this cantata for the prestigious Beethoven Price, but it lost to Robert Fuchs.

I agree. I think Mahler appreciated Bruckner, but they inhabited different musical (and cultural) worlds. Other than the solemnity and grand scope of their symphonies, I see little similarity.

I was called up from London and paid to bump up the choir as Simon Rattle was not satisfied with the choir. But we were only four tenors. Howvever, Rattle did say say to us in McDonald's "Thank you for saving my recording". It must have been even more crap before.
