Gustav Mahler's tears upon departing Venice inspired Thomas Mann to write the novel, and this scene from the film where Aschenbach is playing with his daughter in the mountainous countryside was inspired by Mahler's life.
Mahler spent time in Südtirol / Alto Adige, Italy where he wrote some of his symphonies. He was devastated by death of one of his two daughters and the infidelity his wife, Alma. Viscounti draws upon Mahler's tragic life to deepen Mann's story, as the continuous adagietto from Mahler's 5th symphony haunts the film.

There were times, during the film, when I was starting to suffocate from the atmosphere... At the beginning, when Aschenbach is swung in a gondole, with that gondolier that doesn't want to obey the instructions (and we are aware of the death symbols throughout the entire imagery). The continuous sound of waves. Then Venice itself, all rotten, as are so many faces and the air. Not to mention the heart-attack scene... All the grotesque elements.

@ididete No, sorry, I disagree. This film has introduced people to Mahler's music who might otherwise never have heard it. In addition, the film is not a literal filming of the book.

Where did you get the info that Mahler was ever in Venice, and what year? The only source I have is Dirk Bogarde's autobiography, relating what Visconti (who heard it from Thomas Mann, the eye-witness) told Bogarde. I have searched several sources: biographies, letter collections and memoirs, but have turned up nothing corroborating what Bogarde wrote. I would really like to know the answer. Thank you.

I never heard that Mahler ever visited Venice. Thomas Mann (the author of Death in Venice) visited Venice and was under the impression of Venice and Mahler's death. Although his character was a writer, not a composer, he wrote the novel to the memory of Mahler.

I know you wrote your query seven years ago, so you probably know by now that Death In Venice has nothing to do with the composer Mahler- absolutely nothing at all. The only 'connection' is that Visconti decided to use the Adagio from Mahler's fifth symphony in the soundtrack. Mahler did not obsess over a young man, he had two daughters whom he adored, he had no relationship with Venice and he did not die as the character Aschenbach does in the story Death In Venice.

@@paulybarr I suppose Aschenbach was an alter ego of Thomas Mann (in the original story he is not a composer but a writer) who was a homosexuell and liked beautiful young boys (though he never had sex with them, never touched them). Mann spent his holidays in Venice. I think, Mahlers music was perfect for this movie

@@paulybarr There are more connections tha that - Mahler lost one of his daughters, developed a geart condition and died a few yyears after that. It's true that it was Visconti's idea to make Aschenbach a composer and add a detail or two from Mah,er's life to his backstory. The rest of what you said was true - Mahler had no interests in men or boys nor did he die in Venice.

Danko Sekulic Yes indeed- I'm very familiar with Mahler's life, including the death of his beloved elder daughter and his fatal heart condition. But what has either of those to do with this story- apart from the fact that Ashenbach dies at a comparatively young age?

@@paulybarr There are flashbacks to Aschebachs's happy family life and a tragedy that put an end tonit. It is implied, however, that , unlike Mahler, he had only one child.
