Their Mahoro reminds me so much of the way Ambuya Stella Chiweshe used to play it. I'd love to know what defines the "ancient style". Whether it refers only to this particular Mahororo version, or in general to their way of staying mainly in the middle and upper registers while using the basses for accents.

This is a difficult question. The label ancient is not mine, but what Samanyanga (the old man playing and singing) said of the song and style. The style can be used for other songs, and may be how he drops those basses and moves between singing and the bass lines. There are many other versions of Mahororo that flow more ‘seamlessly’.

I don't speak chiShona unfortunately, but the way his expression goes between verbal and speaking with the mbira is very touching. It goes straight to my heart. And reminds me so much of Ambuya Stella. I appreciate your effort to reply to my question. @@ZimbabweMbira
