One morning after breakfast, Scott went to check on Bambi and Maia to see if they’d be interested in crossing to the far back side of Yard 5. The two decided to set up for the day across the first creek, but Maia eventually opted to go a little further and crossed the second creek. As we all know, Maia loves a good opportunity to explore and she headed to a lush and lovely spot that we call “the middle of nowhere.”
The farthest of the two creeks can wear down from a little erosion during the beginning of the rainy season. It’s definitely passable for all of the elephants, and Lady used to be able to navigate the trip up and down the creek bank often, even with her sore feet. To ensure there were no trees blocking the way or other obstacles, we cleared some of the path to make sure that Bambi could walk there more easily with her stiff leg.
This video was taken just after dinner. You can see Maia surrounded by tall grasses and lots of greenery. She’d been taking her time wandering and grazing, but she finally appeared coming around the corner toward Scott. Bambi was back on the near side of the creek for dinner, so Maia decided to head back in her direction for the evening. She reunited with both Bambi, who appeared happy to have her friend back.
