It’s disappointing that fashion students don’t even know what historical things are called, but hate them (like tabis) , the longer I studied fashion , the more I loved and appreciated everything , even the things I would personally never wear. I love some opinionated tea, but it kinda sucked to hear artsy people have such rigid views on what is acceptable. Also the hypocrisy was a bit much, saying athleisure is over whilst wearing a sports jersey , and browsing brandy melville in your new balances , yet ready and willing to talk shit 😂

I went to fashion design school, and most of the schools have a really high acceptance rate. A lot of the students view the way they dress as a competition with the other students to see who can be more “unique”. i think it's worth noting too that what's actually trending in reality and what's trending on tiktok are two vastly different worlds. obviously, these students have their fingers on the pulse of fashion THROUGH social media, so of course they're going to get sick of things much much faster, but in reality i find that the trend cycle does operate so much slower than what is shown online. taking some time away from tiktok does wonders for how you perceive clothes and trends!
@werewolfcountry Жыл бұрын
This is true! If you look at the data, we're also buying less new clothes than we used to. But if you were to just watch TikTok you would honestly think we were buying an outfit a day. I am sure /some/ people buy too many clothes and skew the averagee, but spending on clothes has gone down since the pandemic and I would assume it will continue on a downward trajectory or stablise now because of numerous factors.

Drives me crazy 😅

I completely share your opinion. When I buy a pair of sneakers, I want them to last at least a few years, not a season. I love how more people are talking of the trend cycle as a bad trend itself. This video was way more informative than when they were talking about what they did like, because it felt more authentic, and not what they’d seen on catwalks or trend lists. I’d love to chat with them about what they REALLY want to wear. Their predictions were not reflective of the great clothes that a lot of them were wearing, but followed what I’ve seen influencers saying for a while now, and following catwalk trends - which have always come after the early adopters and street style crew. I guess they were young and trying to sound like they knew what they were talking about. But ironically, catwalk designers would watch them walking in and out of that building, making notes on the real life styles these young trendy things are wearing.

I think its wild when some of these students said "trends" that people have actually been wearing for years. Like the Frye Boots for example, maybe this is me just being salty because I love them... but they have been around for so so long and yes they have just gained more popularity in the recent years but they've literally been around since the 1970s...like they ain't going anywhere and are built to last. Additionally I think this is a great example of an item that has already existed that became trendy vs brands going out and creating all of these new clothes to follow trends (ie everything ribbon, lace, and sporty). To me these two 'trends' feel very different because on the one hand you can really find Frye boots secondhand and participate sustainably vs on the other you most likely are gonna go out and but it new. Curious on others thoughts on this and if they have language to differentiate these "trends". I guess you can say "micro trend" but the bows and lace definitely do not feel micro. Sustainable vs unsustainable trends? idk, hope this made sense though!

Interesting to hear and to see what they are wearing too. Personally, most of the outfits these students are wearing are things I would consider to be not only incredibly average, but several of them seem straight unfashionable... Irony must be back in style. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder I suppose. The only outfit that stood out to me that I could even remember by the end of the video is the woman with the blue eyelashes, flower, and shirt. I get that not everyone dresses up in a super fleshed out outfit every day, especially when going to school. I guess I expected fashion students to look a bit better than the average person though, not worse.

How can you be a fashion student if you literally rule out entire fabrics?? When you don’t even know what Tabis are (regardless of whether you like them or not)? The only thing I agreed with was TikTok copy and paste, which humorously many of the individuals here fall under.

none of their outfits scream fashion student though..I'm disappointed.

So those who hate on skinny jeans, what do you all wear with your tall boots if not opting for skirts/dresses or really wide leg pants? Skinny jeans are practical classics and will never go out of style. They might not be trendy but will remain a major style item.

Yes, agree. They also just look sleek and good with so many things. I don’t mind the current baggier shape at all but it doesn’t work for certain looks at all. Maybe I’m just an elder millennial clinging to my time tho 😂

in most of europe women still wear skinny jeans and you’ll never hear people say that it looks bad, skinny jeans are classy and imo no matter what trends come and go they’ll always be a good choice, so i don’t understand this big hatred people have for skinny jeans, it’s always the girls who just follow every trend and claim to be good at fashion who say this.

Easy, I don’t have any tall boots. But if I had, I’d only style them with tights and short skirts. In my current wardrobe, I just don’t need skinny jeans. They’re tight and bothersome to put on, and they don’t suit my skinny frame. It doesn’t add anything to my outfits. Imo, the people who suit skinny jeans the best are people with curves. Because their frame gives the jeans dimension and purpose.

I wear skinny jeans with my riding boots. It helps keep my jeans from getting wet in the snow and rain. I hate wet cold pants touching my ankles. I have flare pants, too, but I don't wear them if they're wet outside because then they get gross & grimey.

This is interesting. The majority of people interested in fashion and people on red carpets, fashion shows, etc, are not exclusively in their early twenties. So to see this group of fashion students in early 2000s styles sharing their opinions is a pocket of the fashion world, but they’re fashion students in NYC with a sense of authority on fashion because of that.

So I work on a college campus, and I’ve never seen any of these trends irl? Are they mostly on tiktok. Specially the ribbons, I’ve seen them in people’s hair and that’s it.

I actually agree with so much of this. And some of it is like - if I had really uncovered that critical edge in myself I would have been like - oh you're right - there is something wrong with sequins. They're uncomfortable, and get damaged easily. Agree with crocs and skinny jeans, completely outdated. Sad to see the Dad shoe go, but I hear it. The lace top is a little played, but I feel like quality lace still has a role to play. Completely disagree with velvet and corduroy - those are timeless. Bows and cowboy boots are still cute. The Marc Jacobs tote and the ridiculous Smurf shoes - yeah of course. And I have NEVER liked ripped jeans. I think above all the message is: trust yourself. And remember the part of you that knows exactly what you like and what you don't. And give that authentic self a chance to be in the world, you don't have to go with the flow.

I agree too, some people are critical of them for talking abt trends when they’re trendy themselves or talking about basics but I think many are just preferences ! Like you have to genuinely have a dislike for corduroy/velvet/sequins to mention it bc they’re such basics. And I love that, bc it shows that they have a genuine personal opinion on it vs just pointing out what’s falling out of trend(to be fair that was the whole point of the video but still). I would love to see a video where she just asks them “what item have you always hated”

I like corduroy and velvet but own nothing with it because I live in Texas and it doesnt stay cold THAT long or get that cold in general, so I feel I wont get that much wear if I bought anything with those materials 🥺 but wish I did own some now…

People are being way to hard on the girls in the comments YALL they were literally asked what trends are over, most of them didn't say they were bad just not for them. People are allowed to dislike things.

Ahhh! Gen Z you’re killing me! ❤️😂 we need “dad” sneakers for working out, and if you’re short and have a tight curvy body like me skinny jeans are a gift from God!! ❤😂😂 wide leg jeans just don’t work! 🙈 but I appreciate the fresh perspective!

lol it's hard to take them seriously, I don't understand how they can be fashion students and hold such rigid statements towards what's in or not. I would've expected that from high school kids or anyone who just wants to sound edgy and isn't that interested/educated in the subject but not from them It's making me feel a lot better actually, they don't know any better and we can all wear what we want !

Or while they are almost finishing answering the trends question day “hey also you would mind sharing your social media with my viewers or no?

This video is giving me flashbacks to 2014, when “basic” was such an insult. I love fashion trends and lululemon leggings, and it’s okay if others think I’m not cool. Clothes are just superficial and genuine coolness is way deeper than what you wear
