Maiden Voyage of 1940 Ford COE 4BT Cummins

Had a goal months ago to make the car show in Fairfield, IL on May 28, 2011. Started the engine for the first time that very morning after a hasty trip to the parts store. Rear brakes were grabbing on the test drive. Decided to go anyway at the last minute. Made the show, truck was a hit and had a great time.

what a machine. My grandfather did a 41 with a 5.9 l behind the cab.. so we have leg room. But I've never noticed these wonderful machines till the first time I saw his now I'm hooked.

I love that truck. I wish Ford would return to the drawing board and make a new line of Ford Coe. I don't see myself even tracking one down and going threw the trouble of working all the problems out to make it road worthy like you did.

4BT was already mounted in donor chassis (1983 Chevy P30 step van). Power is adequate and the engine fit better in the space available. (Engine is in stock location - beside driver). Noise level is high right now, haven't put in any sound deadener. Top speed is 80mph. Power steering and brakes work perfectly. Hope to make a follow-up video this summer showing the rollback bed now installed. Thanks for commenting.

That is such a nice Cabover, something I've always wanted to do and never got around to, you know, doing everything for everybody else. lol I'm 66 years old now and it's a little too late to get started on now. Not overly warm. Diesel is efficient and not a lot of excess heat is created. Lots of airflow available too.

It looked and sounded great and ran very smoothly. I bet it rode kind of rough, with no weight on the rear and riding directly over the front axle, but still a small price to pay, if it did.

Bad-ass truck, and family you have there. Saw the door stickers. I work at the place next-door to IDIDIT in Tecumseh, MI. I know, no big deal, but cool to me. Recently got to tour their facility when they hosted a "car show".

That's is really something, nice truck! How does the turbo 4 compare to the old flathead V-8 power wise?

Turbo 4 is about 120 hp vs. original flathead at 95 hp. The 4 engine has more torque (diesel). Power is adequate. Unlike the flathead, the Cummins has the potential to put out much more power with the right mods, if needed. Truck now has an NV4500 5 speed which is much more fun than the automatic.
