Peter and Cathy complete the finishing touches, pitching the side panels and gores and lashing the gunnel caps - the last of the 400 + hours taken to craft this beautiful canoe. Peter then takes it on its maiden voyage!

'Paddle, paddle, paddle your birch, gently down the lake.Merrily, merrily I'm tickled pink, for she glides and does not sink.' WELL DONE Peter and Catherine, and thank U 4 sharing this especial 'maiden voyage'. Thanks also 4 your kind words. I believe the 'Voyageurs' sang to while away the hours and keep pace on their treks. Don't B shy Peter, U can beller away 'in or out' of tune in the bush! LOL! Great things R accomplished through 'perseverance'. A gift U both possess. So here's 2 your 'perseverance'..."By perseverance the snail reached the ark." (Charles Spurgeon). Continued health and God's abundant blessings! :)

I sometimes when working on projects feel like that there snail. My dad’s favorite saying was that patience was the best tool in the tool box. Admittedly, there are some days when I can’t locate that tool. There was one Voyageur in each canoe that received extra pay, he was the singer and the one that set the cadence for paddling. Always a pleasure Marie!

That canoe turned out to be a great example of traditional construction techniques. Very nicely done. It's nice to see Peter and Cathy working together as that may have been the case in the 1700s. The finished canoe reminded me of a Dick Proenneke's quote when he said this, and I will paraphrase; too many men make a part of things, I like to make things to completion.

I’ve owned seven canoes (from terrible plastic to beautiful wood and canvas and then to Kevlar). Your boat is beautiful, but can you tell us how much it weighs? As I grew older (I’m now 73) I had to go to Kevlar. A fine canoe is a work of art and a joy to paddle. I’ve sailed, motored, and rowed a number of boats, but I always go back to paddling for the simplicity, grace, and peace. An early morning, a canoe, a few birds, some solitude, and then you have real peace. The next time I’m on the water I’ll think off you!
@TheWoodlandEscape

Thanks Kevin. Like you, I find true peace on the water. This canoe is probably in the order of 60 pounds. You need to add mist rising off the water in your scenario, then you have it all!

Such an accomplishment! Congratualtions on your new canoe! If you ever find yourself further south on the continent, you're welcome to stop for a visit here in Middle Tennessee. I'm a volunteer at Fiddlers Grove, a section of our county fairgrounds where we maintain relocated historic buildings that were in danger of being lost to development (and the decay of time) - our oldest goes back to the the 1790s. We work to present history to the public through tours, events, and school field trips, as well as our part of the Wilson County Fair, which is now also the Tennessee State Fair. I personally pitch in by hosting outdoor cooking demonstration in cast iron cookware over fire, as well as help operate our water-powered grist mill. We are proud to host half a million visitors each year and to offer demonstrations and hertiage crafts as even a small part fo their visit to our Fair. Consider yourself (and Catherine) our guests either during the Fair in late August or anytime throughout the year. My fellow volunteers and I ofetn share internet resources of information and inspiration among each other - your channel is definitely a favorite of ours. I'd be honored to host you on a tour of Fiddlers Grove, any local area historic sites, and even for a canoe trip down the Cumberland River. I love your channel and can't thank you enough for all that you share with the world!

Beautifully done Peter. Looking forward to following the next task. We used to use similar pitch called tacky for our hands pulling competitive tug of war. A mix of pine resin and petrol heated over a gas burner. Lol. It was known to go wrong from time to time. It aided in gripping the rope. Sometimes our callases ripped off with the tacky and would leave our hands bloodied. Was okay though. The next load of Tacky stopped the bleeding.🤣

Such a beautiful site to see you gliding along the water Peter! I've really enjoyed this series watching you and your wife working together to create such a work of art. You mentioned folks have shared their family history. A wee bit of my family history, I have traced my line back to Lieut Daniel Knowlton (5th GG), a Scout in the F&I and also fought in the AWI with is famous brother Thomas "Knowlton's Rangers". Daniel saved "Old Put" from losing his head to a tomahawk! General Putnam later said “Gad, Zounds, had I only Daniel Knowlton to take with me, I’d lick Hell itself.”

so happy to see it getting wet .... notice your wife was not in the canoes' first voyage ... smart woman .... I guess she will if and when you get home dry LOL I notice that when you got in it only went in to the water very little .... the draft ..... is that right term ? holds it weight good ... are you far from that lake ? beautiful area . must be a lot of trout in there Congratulations Peter ... It was great watching you make it and explain it ....I was looking forward to each one .... Mentioned in your video about people saying their heritage..... I have a relative that signed the Declaration of Independence

There is some interesting blood in your veins Bruce. As to the Lake, only minutes away. The canoe does have a lot of freeboard, meaning it will carry some great weight.

She is beautiful. Oil is an insulator, butter on the hands allows you to make popcorn balls with 300 degree syrup. Use butter for smearing in the holes and no stains to scrub off. I also works ti mold the ends of melted nylon rope. Out of the target date but works.

Definitely in my element! I haven’t found anything that compares to the sensation of drifting along in a canoe. Never built one but, once your traveling down a waterway you begin to study the relationship you have with your canoe. Arriving safe at your destination, dry and with all your gear depend on it!!! Great video.... it obvious you are living the life....!!!

There is beauty in nature and your canoe reflects that beauty. Years ago I built a strip solo canoe and it was a wonderful ride. 15.5 ft long and it was more a lake canoe than a white water ride. Anyway my son-in-law said I should bring it to the BWCAW for a week. I never had it packed for a trip but when I put in with my packs and poles it was a dream other water. Your canoe reminds me of the pride and satisfaction that comes from your efforts. Wishing you many travels and hours of satisfaction on the water.

The neat part of a birch bark is that it literally is nature…. No artificial ingredients. Do you still have and use your strip canoe? It sounds like it’s a good one.
