Assalamu alaikum! Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful wedding traditions of the Kanuri people. I am a new subscriber attempting to learn more about Kanuri culture. It seems that a lot goes into solidifying the marital union between a Kanuri couple in marriage - far more than what is expected in my American culture. I have been seeing this Nigerian Kanuri man for a couple of months now. He is a decent fellow and we get along well in person, masha’Allah. He has already introduced me to some of his closest friends as his fiancé, although I never accepted any proposal from him. We are both Muslims and want to keep things halal, so I can understand the desire to marry quickly as opposed to a lengthy courtship period. However, he and his friends have suggested to me that we should have a small wedding here in the U.S. instead of having it in Maidugari with all of his family in attendance. They expressed concern about timeline, travel and expense, which are all valid points of consideration. My biggest concern is that, in the absence of us following his tribal customs in marriage ceremony, his community may not accept me as his real wife. Should I accept his proposal and agree to marry him, I want it to be known that I am his wife and that our marriage is real. I understand that he is expecting me to learn his culture for the sake of teaching any children we may have together, so I believe it is only fair that he marry me in the customary way. Am I overthinking this? We will sit down and discuss all of these things very soon, in sha’a Allah, but any feedback from a neutral party would be greatly appreciated.
