Barn cleaning today like everyday, plus I’ve got to clean up the Argo and return it to my buddy today.
Goose egg autopsy today, and today I finally get to open my boxes I got at the post office last week.
I killed myself today in the swamp in the Argo, man I’m moving slow.

Went to a city park today and there were a bunch of wild mallard ducks there. We fed them and then all of the sudden a mama duck showed up with a bunch of baby ducklings! They were so adorable and friendly! It was so tempting to try and catch one to pet it, but we didn't. Now I know why the ducklings make you so happy :)

Matt, Peter is very correct. The drone owners that I know said to tell you to not try to do anything other than fly the drone. It takes a great deal of concentration. Peter you are indeed a Christian man, in the true meaning of the word. Thank you for doing what I wanted to do so much! We can all look forward to drone footage of the ducks. One of my friends has knowledge of several drone fliers in Canada and has promised to contact them to see if they are close enough to come and help you learn. Apparently, like model plane clubs, there are drone clubs in some areas. I sure hope at least one of them is close. It may take awhile, but he's watched your show and says drone footage would be great! You will have to let the ducks learn to ignore the noise, because they are noisy. Thanks for the fun tonight. I really needed it.

Don't let yourself feel too down about the weak ones, Matt. You do way more for them than most farms would, and it's just nature. I know it can be hard to get past it even when you did all you could. I raise amphibians and I ended up with a single healthy adolescent out of a group of 20 or so this year, it was brutal. At least they meet a better end this way than they would in the wild or some cold, industrial factory farm. So far as the hoard goes, I've never seen healthier, faster ducklings! They're huge this year! You must've made some really good choices with breeders this time around

I was about to comment that scaring them from above is the most effective way to get them to move, when a few minute in you actually did it. Sudden movements or sweeping motions above them tend to work better than noise that they get used to.
@crazyduck9657
@crazyduck9657 8 жыл бұрын
Dug really does make them move, but soon the feeding bags won't because the ducklings will associate them with food. When I go to the park to feed the ducks, the sound of the bag is like a duck call that brings them all bumping against me.
@crazy808ish
@crazy808ish 8 жыл бұрын
The duck's instinct is to move away from anything that could be an aerial predator. Anything above them will still work, since that reaction's pretty firmly ingrained in them.

and my husband said you're more than welcome Matt. and that when he goes again will look to see if they have them since they are only $10 for four compared to what eBay wanted was 20 something for 4. but I can't find the other lights less than $200 and that's from Sears. but I'll keep my eyes open. Anything to help the adventures along. it's funny I had my husband hook up the Wii to my bedroom TV 70 inch TV and I just let the the channel play all day and night on autoplay and then when I went to relax because of what's going on with my health finding out you have a brain tumor you kind of want to be by yourself every now and then I put on the ducklings and I just smile and wish I was there surrounded by the ducklings pinching me pulling my hair climbing on top of me.

Today is the 17th here and it was cooler. We've had some really bad days this week very hot in the 90 and very, very high humidity. Not the type of weather I enjoy at all. Hubby mowed the lawn today - he has taken some vacation days. I tried to help by picking up sticks, but my feet began to throb very badly and I had to come in and put them up. Sigh.... I loved to garden and now I can't.

I wish I was closer to help you out, Matt. You could take and entire day or two off and just sleep and heal. You would get better so much faster. Hopefully that high school kid I found a few episodes ago will come out to help you. I would call Purina and ask if that feed is actually for ducklings. I don't think a company like Purina would not spend the money on the packaging to properly reflect what is in the bag. It doesn't make sense. The retailer might be trying to BS you. Two things about those plastic bags though: They probably keep the feed fresher longer, and rodents are probably less likely to smell what is in the bag and then eat a hole in one. You might be able to recycle them. We recycle plastic grocery bags here in the States. I see no reason they couldn't recycle those bags too. Maybe mail one as a tote with each T-shirt you sell. :-) A drone from Peter! How generous! That's going to drive the ducks nuts, but maybe you can chase off predators with it as well as film. Be sure to take the camera off when you are learning to fly it, even with the camera protector.

Oh bullshit. That is nonsense. Neighbors help each other all the time. Colin came out last year and helped him out. If there was an insurance or liability issue, that is easily solved by having the person sign a waiver.
@alan30189
@alan30189 8 жыл бұрын
I didn't see that reaction from him and am not about to go hunting for it, and Colin did visit last year and he didn't kick him off the property. If that was an issue, there are ways to get around it, as I said above. You could probably get a liability waiver off the internet for free. I am also only talking about a day or two so he can heal up, not three months.

Matt, I still think you would've had a better ratio with the goose eggs if you would've put them under broody ducks instead of the incubator, even if there's a problem with the inbreeding thing, you still would've had a better ratio. Goose eggs and muscovy eggs don't do well in the incubator, they're better with ducks sitting on them, I've seen videos saying that incubators don't work as good as the ducks/geese doing the incubation process.

Hey Matt, just a thought.. (not trying to be a keyboard expert) but im wondering if maybe the muscoveys and geese may need a bit different temp and humidity throughout the incubation/hatch process. They seemed to do better when your temps where a bit off from what the hatchery told you. Not sure if what they told you goes for the muscoveys and geese as well or not. Just trying to help you figure out what went wrong, I cant believe how well the duck hatch went for you and then the total opposite for the moscoveys and geese. Anyway, as usual, thanks for bringing us on this journey with you and sharing it with us. Hope your pain in the arse subsides soon!

Hey Mat, aren't the ducklings still a bit young to be out on the lawn? I wonder how easy it would be to get them back into the pen, not to mention the airborne predators. But, I guess you'd have thought about that too.

Matt usually sets up an enclosure to protect the ducklings. Once they get a little bigger and the geese start protecting them the ducklings spend time out of the pen. At least, that is how he did it last year.

Yes, I know that... but he kept saying he was going to put them out on the lawn (not the pen) and that they could be free ranging already. That's why I asked.

The only thing preventing the ducklings from being outside is the cold. Doesn't matter how young they are, so long as it's warm enough. Wild ducks do it all the time, and they actually get used to the cold far quicker than domestic ducks are allowed to.

I have to say, the goose eggs look like they died just prior to pipping, not before you put them in the hatcher. The yolk sac looks big, but it really does all start to absorb around pipping time, it happens very fast. And from all the liquid in the eggs I do think the humidity was too high for them, I don't think it was due to inbreeding. Most birds won't exhibit major problems due to inbreeding after only one generation, and I think you would be seeing deformation in the goslings, not late-stage death. I'll repeat from my last post on a previous video that both muscovy duck and goose eggs do better with humidity not above 45%, perhaps even lower. I really think that's the issue, because I've had a lot of losses due to high humidity. You can always tell because you have a high rate of late-stage death (prior to pipping). There aren't a lot of other causes of late-stage death. A number of years ago, when it was widely accepted that goose eggs required very high humidity during incubation, successfully hatching goose eggs was thought to be very difficult. But we got it all wrong. They actually need lower humidity than most other bird eggs. Think of it this way: an egg needs to lose moisture before it hatches so that the air cell expands enough to let the chick breathe. The egg has pores through which this moisture is lost as the egg "breathes" over time. A goose egg has an incredibly thick shell, which means moisture is lost far less readily than most other eggs. Your duck hatch was probably so good this year partly because your duck eggs had especially thin shells, so they lost more moisture than they otherwise would. Moisture loss is so crucial for successfully hatching eggs! Here are two threads from the site backyardchickens.com that are really helpful in case anybody is interested in the issue of moisture loss and humidity. The guy from the first link really knows a lot about the hatching process. www.backyardchickens.com/t/491013/goose-incubation-hatching-guide-completed www.backyardchickens.com/a/incubating-and-hatching-muscovy-eggs
