Mailbag! Has the Rob Pelinka Era Been a Success? Will (Should?) the Lakers Trade Austin Reaves?

The Lakers are reportedly ready to open up their coaching search a little wider this week, with interviews with the big batch of well-regarded assistants (David Adelman, Micah Nori, Chris Quinn) expected to happen relatively soon.
In the meantime, it's a perfect time to get into the Locked On Lakers mailbag (found in the community section of the KZbin page, or @Kambrothers on Twitter/X) and spend some time talking about the guy who is ultimately responsible for choosing the next head coach. No, not LeBron James (ha!) but Rob Pelinka. How much faith do we have in Pelinka's ability to find sustained success going foward? To this point, would you call his stewardship of the team a success? It's hard to call it an abject failure, with one title and one trip to the Conference Finals... but that's not the same thing as a success.
From there, it's a question about personnel and the direction the Lakers go next year. How attractive are the Lakers still for the make-good type players they'll need to fill out a roster? Are they still viewed as a place where players who need some redemption have the opportunity to get it?
And what about a trade of Austin Reaves, if it means getting back something special? Last year, the Lakers seemed very hesitant to include him in any sort of deal. Do they still have that luxury, if it means getting back an elite level talent?

Not to beat a dead horse but i think the front office lost all credibility when we blew up a great roster to obtain westbrook. Worst trade in sports history, that i can think of. It even resulted in vogel losing the lockerroom and getting fired. A championshop coach fired within two years. All because we needed someone who could work with westbrook. Just a collosal mistake.

Jerry Buss was a great owner as he understood people. He gave the FO reigns to Jerry West, who had a tremendous eye for talent and understood how to build championship teams. Jeanie is not nearly her father as an owner and Pelinka has no clue how to evaluate talent or build a championship team.

You're only strong as your weakest link. Sadly, the weakest link is OWNERSHIP. Until Jeanine either sells the team or hires a competent head of basketball ops (ie. someone like Bob Myers). Keeping it in house with folks like Pelinka, the Rambii, and having a dynamic that their top player is a defacto GM, this team will flounder and spin it's wheels. I don't expect changes at the top and thusly, have lower expectations. Barely in the playoffs and flame outs year after year.

I think on the subject of Austin Reeves, being untouchable. I think there is a category of a core player, I tcould make an argument , we get lost on other teams, players, who honestly you probably never see, more than a few games a year. I think this is where analytics come into play. If you take in account shot attempts, field goal percentage, salary and playing in a small market team, where there is not as much pressure. Austin is better or comparable to them. He single handedly closed a playoff game in his first appearance in the playoffs. He is also improved stats wise every year. He also is going on his third coach in for years. We see players leave the Lakers and become all stars, and for you to say if they keep Austin they are not serious about winning. If the other players you mentioned were serious about winning, they would not be on the trade block.

The Rob (solo) Era has been a success. People have to keep in prospective, this is a business 1st and about winning 2nd; plus he's had to "keep it cool" with LeBron/Klutch (get Westbrook, get rid of Westbrook, etc.). I think the true test will be when LeBron is gone.

Maybe a new coach gives the team 5 more wins. As the Western Conference gets better (Memphis, San Antonio, Houston), I imagine the number of wins stay the same. Maybe the Warriors falter, but the other playoff teams in the West stays the same or gets better. So, overall the Lakers are still in the same playin game hell.

He's just too little and won't slow any of those guys down. There's a current risk involved with placing the Lakers' hopes for a chip on the shoulders of a 40 year old and an of injured big man on the backside of his prime. B.I. may represent the best talent available and the risk vs reward ratio may be worth it considering what the Lakers are shooting for. Besides, the previously healthy guard acquisitions (Nunn and Vincent) have not gone so well.

I see and hear fans and the media having a heavy dose of blamitis. We want to place the blame on Jeannie and the front office, Rob Pelinka, and the previous coaches for our losses. Now, we are at the crossroads where Jeannie Buss wants to make sure LeBron is happy. This is a crippling move. Why? 1. LeBron will request a max contract extension which makes it tough to have quality role players. 2. LeBron wants LA to draft Bronny and is placed on a regular contract for a player that the scouting reports said that he is a poor man's role player. * This will place tremendous friction with little continuity. 3. LeBron is no longer a superstar. Yes, he fills up the stat sheets, but he constantly walks up and the court, plays laxadazile defense, and whines and throws tantrums on the court like a two year old* very bad leader and bad role model. 4. Gutting this roster for another star will further deplete assets for years to come. Do we wish to have another Westbrook outcome? Also, would this scenario win us a chip in a very strong western conference? Bottom line: we need to make a hard decision and build around AD, keep the young core, and secure great players that wish to dawn the purple and gold. It's time to allow LeBron to ride off into the sunset as a retired incredible player or allow him to go to a team where he can win his fifth championship.

The Lakers have one of the worst fanbases at times. We are way too entitled and ungrateful. In the Rob Pelinka era we won a title, tying Bos btw, and went to another WCF. These 5 years of Rob have been better than the entire franchise histories of 12 teams incl the Clippers. If AD wasn’t hurt the year after the quick turnaround after the bubble, and if we played any team other than Den we might have 2-3 more titles. Yes Rob has made some big mistakes, but let’s stop acting like he hasn’t done anything right either.

No hope as long as Pelinka is there. Cant draft, his solution to center problem was sign Giles. I think he'll sign popular media candidate like ham as coach.
