What was never mentioned: the difference between the 9100 and 9200. The 9100 is open on the 3:00PM position while the 9200 is open on the 9:00 position. I learned it the hard way and had to buy the other lock. That means that if the lock is at the left of the door you need the 9100. If it’s at the right of the door, you need the 9200.

agreed. Merely saying "operates clockwise" is vague since the lock really operates both directions (lock and unlock). Just say clockwise to unlock for the 9100 and counter-clockwise to unlock for the 9200 and it is crystal clear.

We use the CompX locks on the mailbox clusters at the office buildings we own/manage at work. Outside of occasionally cutting a key for a tenant who lost theirs (not the USPS delivery lock) or completely replacing a lock and issuing new keys for a tenant, haven't got too involved with these. Lots of good info in this video, thanks Jason!

Hey Jason, a great video to show folks the internals and such. I have heard you explain the differences between thw two locks, so not sure why so many miss it and ask...lol. My only thought is by the time I rekey and or cut extra keys, it's more cost effective to just drop in a new lock. It's new new, not rebuilt new. Saves customer time as well. Thoughts?

I rebuild them all the time. First thing I do is completely remove the top cover. Dump all the pins and rekey to a new random key. I reuse all the pins and springs. Amassed myself a nice little rekey set. I enjoy working on the small pin locks. Watch for the left and right keyway.

I went to my mailbox one day and my key wouldn't go in. I thought I had the wrong key but someone put a different mailbox lock on my mailbox, it's a 3 unit box. So I got my picks and opened the lock and removed it. I got another mailbox lock from my locksmith friend and installed it using the hex nut so it can't be removed so fast.

Another story, a customer came into our shop with a two USPS mailbox locks and asked if we could make a key for it. I told him I can't because that belongs to the US Post Office. He said the locks came with the building. I told him we could get similar locks that's not from the USPS if he wanted. But he just shook my hand and left. Don't know what that handshake was about. I just thought that was weird.

Sometimes the big Box Lock sometimes you can get the key out as the lock that traps the key is faulty

do you sell a CCW (counter clockwise) lock replacement, or just the clockwise only? My lock is on the left side and hingle on right side, which your link says normally means its a clockwise lock.

My lock doesn't have a removable pin cover... I accidentally let a pin fall into a groove on the plug now I'm not sure what to do.

What were you taking it apart for? None of them technically have a “removable pin cover” but they can be removed and staked back on if necessary. It’s messy Purchase a new one as a last resort, they are less than $15 🤷‍♂️

Always curious to know why would the mailbox locks be used instead of a plain cam lock. First job I ever did for an appartement building I had swiped out a bunch of different locks for some LSDA 5/8” cam locks. Although I keep a few mailbox locks, I always reach for a cam lock.

Meaning, I needed to know what clockwise/cclockwise looks like. I need to replace a usps lock that LOCKS by turning left. Is that a counter-clockwise then?

redphantom2104 yep. It sounds like you have a 9100. Mailboxes are always “locked” so you base it on unlocking

Confused about CW vs CCW, if mailbox key hole is on left, does that mean C9100 (cw) version?

Direction the key turns to unlock. Most of the time if the hinges are on the right (and lock is on the left) it will be the C9100)

Help i lost my key to i was gonna open it with pry it open with a hammer and replace with prime line from home depot. Is it possible because the from seems to be attached to mail box

Hdhfh Enthb do not hammer anything you will damage the box. If it’s a condo or apartment get with management, if it’s part of a rented property check with your local post office about possibly removing it when the mail carrier is dropping off mail and had it open

have you ever heard anyone have a problem using Ilco 1646r blank vs. CompX 1646r blank I have tried the Ilco more times than i can count and it wont work. Getting ready to buy the compx brand. the only difference i can see between the ilco and the original CompX is a slight bevel on the CompX.

We were buying the OEM blanks before the Ilco o es were out due to demand but as soon as Ilco started making them we switched and have never had any issues (and go through a LOT of them) Odd, are they just tight?

@@selock Nope they go in fine, I'm gonna buy a single OEM and see what happens. im at the point that ive had to just change the locks to the 880108 i dont have any issues with using the Ilcos on those
