‘I dressed Diana and Kate Middleton is her perfect fashion heir’ | Palace Confidential

The new Princess of Wales is making a series of ‘subtle tributes’ to Princess Diana in her choice of outfits, that’s the view of a leading royal fashion designer. Amanda Wakeley, who has dressed many royals, including both Diana and Catherine, believes that the latter’s skill is ‘owning’ her look.
‘The suit that she wore to the Trooping the Colour this summer, honestly that could have been out of Diana’s wardrobe,’ she tells a special fashion episode of Palace Confidential. ‘She owns it as hers, it’s not a pastiche of how Diana would have worn it, she’s owning her look which is a wonderful look. I love those subtle tributes to her mother-in-law.’
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail’s Royal Editor Rebecca English discusses the Princess of Wales evolution from Kate Middleton to the Princess of Wales, which culminated, she believes, at this year’s Coronation.
‘For me, there was a real - on a fashion level - stop in your tracks moment at the Coronation, when she got into Westminster Abbey,’ she tells the show. ‘She just looked like a Queen in waiting to me. It was so elegant, so polished, so regal I thought “she’s got it”.’
The pair also discuss Camilla’s fashion journey to the Queen, how the King is adapting to his ‘grandfather-of-the-nation’ role style-wise and the Duchess of Sussexes claims about stifling royal clothing protocols.

A really nice lady called me and told me she was worried because the coat I wanted needed to be made but she did have an exact one Catherine bought and would I like it. The customer service was absolutely amazing. The only time I could think of service in the States was an Hermes store by appointment. Nope, didn’t buy anything there. As gorgeous as Princess Diana was, I think Catherine is a far better balanced person, and happier with life, and I'd rather be around that mental attitude than Diana's drama. I can remember reading stuff that just made my heart break for Diana, and I never did think Charles treated her very well, but I would still rather avoid drama in my life. Both gorgeous women who wear and wore amazing clothes and looked incredible.

There are only so many colours in the rainbow and shapes in clothing. How can it be presumed that if Catherine wears the same colour outfit as Diana once wore, it's a tribute to Diana? Nobody could avoid wearing clothes that resemble something Diana once wore because all clothing resembles some other piece in some way.

I just think that the clothes wear Meghan whereas Princess Catherine wears the clothes. It’s impossible to compare them because of Princess Catherine’s height advantage but on many occasions she looks better than the catwalk model whereas Meghan looks rather ‘swamped’ on occasions.

Much to my mother's despair, I have never been the least bit interested in fashion, 77 years on I still prefer my jeans and gumboots, but I found this programme today very interesting and like Rebecca I could have sat and listened to Amanda for a second episode. So nice to hear someone explain the quiet diplomacy /pulling power that the Royal family give to British industry I didn't realize the enormity of £ revenue to the clothing industry even though I was brought up if you can't buy New Zealand made products only buy British. As for the tiaras, I am sure they will be out on full show for state occassions in the future. I thought the absence at the Coronation, which I thought was a request by the King, might have been to emphasise the religious signicance of the event and not have it as a fashion show, there was also the possibility that the Duchess of Sussex may have turned up and who would be responsible for deciding which tiara she could wear. No tiaras, no competition, seemed to be Charles' way of diverting a potential drama and kept Queen Camilla to the fore. Catherine in her garter robes was the show stopper for me. Great show Jo, I love waking up every Friday (NZ) morning for your latest royal update. Never fails to deliver.
