To the pocket thing: it depends on the weight of your fabric and construction of the skirt. Pockets in a light fabric or any fabric without proper stabilization will show and flop about. A pocket placed below the waist but anchored to the waistband of a skirt made from a thick fabric will hardly be noticed. I have a skirt made from a heavy twill that I can fit my phone, a water bottle, and my wallet in one pocket and then routinely go looking for my phone because I forget it's in the pocket, I can't feel it because it is properly inserted and anchored and the skirt is in a heavy fabric. TLDR: pockets are better in heavy winter skirts

First of all: the dress looks great and suits you really well! And you are right, the right Dirdl is flattering every woman :D For anyone interested in the history of the Dirdl: The Dirdl originally was a dress for working class women in rural areas like maids, farmers and so on. It was fairly convenient because it didn't really get in the way and you could easily just wash and switch the apron. In the late 19th century the middle/upper class caught on and in the cities it was seen as an idyllic dress. Over the course of the 20th century it was modernized several times. Today we have a wide range of different styles. :) (I am from Austria by the way.)

Beautiful dress! I don't like it when pockets are pulling on the side seem of a dress. So I made a skirt with pockets anchored to the waistband. Those I love! I hate bringing handbags everywhere, so at least one sizeable pocket in either my skirt or top is a must!
@HeyCuteEarrings3 жыл бұрын
Also pockets in skirts, some people add a connecting "band" or strip of fabric that runs from the protruding part of the pocket inside the dress to the waistband that relieves the weight of what's inside the pockets and maintains a lot of how the skirt would otherwise lay/behave.

I always anchor my pockets to the waist seam so they don't flop about when I put things in them. The skirts/dresses I've done this with, you can't tell I've just crammed them with my phone and enough snacks for 3 days. Definitely recommend for the pocket lovers out there.

it depends on the skirt, buy usually i do like pockets, just to throw my phone in when i'm moving from room to room in my house. if the fabric is sturdy and it makes sense with the dress pattern, i'll add them, otherwise i dont

Great construction and beautiful fairytale dress. Yes, pockets are only necessary if you like to keep your hands cozy and near your body that's about it. I love skirts and dresses with pockets, but like you mentioned no one likes the weight of things making them feel unbalanced swaying back and forth. Most people simply find comfort putting their hands in pockets in the garments they own because it also looks pretty.

I neeed pockets in my skirts and dresses for the little bits and pieces like a handkerchief, my student ID, a mask, housekeys or a rosary or other little pieces, where I don't want to have a whole bag with me. I have nowhere to put my keys if I just want to go for a walk for example. So pockets are absolutely necessary for me :) I find extra bags annoying actually XD

I like patch pockets towards the front. On a dirndle you would have pockets in the apron or a tie on pocket for historical accuracy. Then either a pocket slit to the pocket tied under or just tie it on top. Pockets could be very elaborately stitched

If I put anything in my pockets it is usually something light or traveling a small dostance. Like keys to get the mail, a pen or something else small to take in the other room if my hands are already full. If going out some people, including myself use pockets to rest your hands in. They dont always have to have items in them. Just nice to rest your hands in.

Pocket in skirt in not mainly for carrying stuff, but for just putting the hand there. Sometimes when hands are too full and you just quickly need to keep the phone somewhere and you don't have a bag or maybe the bag will need both hands to open and keep the phone, pockets work.
@mayfair_forest_witch2 жыл бұрын
I always do my pockets attached to the waist (suspended at the waist), so they stay in front and do not flop around. I'm also not a big fan of in-seam pockets, recently taught myself to sew pockets in skirts kinda the way they are in trousers and I love it so much.
@JoJo-rr6lm3 жыл бұрын
There are ways to stabilise pockets without relying solely on the side seams. You either make a giant pocket that gets bagged into the waistline (Morgan Donner tends to use this method) OR you attach ribbon from the waistline down to the inner edge of the pocket (think like a suspender holding up your stockings). Sewstine used this technique on a recent project. Or you can sew the pocket to your lining. Patch pockets also have more support spread across the skirt and not just in the side seams. I hate bags with a burning passion. I always overengineer my pockets and have a tiny wallet.
@moi3793 жыл бұрын

I hate skirt pockets too! I only like them when its similar style to 18th century pockets that attach to the waistband so it doesn't flop around as much. when pockets are only connected to the side seams of the skirt it becomes floppy and the weight pulls down the skirt too much
@SugiyamaHiromin3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if doing them the 18th century style would solve that. You know, have a slit on each side with the pocket tied under. That way, you can have all the storage you want without it pulling on the skirt.
@Elentarien3 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you. I also don't like pockets in skirts for that reason. It moves around too much, the weight is lopsided and it just feels. . .draggy. A small pocket, perhaps, for a kleenex (as someone with allergies, I need it with me at all times. lol) or something small and light. However, I personally just wear tie-on pockets now anyway, so if I were going to make a skirt, I think I'd just add the slit that allowed me to reach through to the tie-on. That doesn't fix the 'lopsided' weight - unless you make it a two-pocket belt, I guess - , but I don't find the separate pocket moves around or drags nearly as much as a skirt pocket does.

@MariaHellerDesigns3 жыл бұрын
I do like pockets in my skirts and dresses, and I usually add them in when making my own, but I only use them for keys or small lightweight objects that I need on hand. I never leave the house without a tote bag or backpack or bag, because I NEED a liter of water on me on ALL TIMES. I don't go anywhere without my reusable water bottle, even if I go out for just 15 min to the nearest bank or grocery store, and I never understood people who go out for the full day and don't need water. So I don't really need pockets, because if I always have a tote or bag with me anyway I can put all my stuff there and don't need to use the skirt pockets anymore.

I also hate that heavy pocket feeling so I anchor all my pockets to the waistband and adjust the size of the pocket based on what I think the skirt can handle. For example, my knee-high skirt made of thinner cotton has a single tiny pocket. Compare to my heavy corduroy jumper dress which has pockets almost big enough to smuggle a chichuahua dog. The great thing about making your own fashion is you make it according to what works for you. Pockets or not, that dress looks amazing on you.

Love this! I recently made this dress and blouse. I would love to see an update on how you finished the seams. I flat felled mine, and I bound the raw edges of the gathered waist with twill tape because I didn't feel like there was enough seam allowance on the bodice to encase it. I think on my next attempt of this pattern I will either do a lining, or increase the waist seam allowance to encase the raw edges. I think next time I will also recalculate the skirt, so I can have side seams in the right place to install pockets (or just pocket openings, I prefer to reach through the dress to the pockets on my bike shorts) Hilariously, I ended up installing the skirt inside out 😵💫 and didn't notice until I had bound the waist seam. Luckily, fabric looks good on both sides, and my flat felled seams look very neat even inside out 😅

My dirdndl has pockets and I didn't even see it had them until I had to turn it inside out to iron it. That dress taught me to always check for pockets because you don't realise how much you miss them until you've experienced 1 dress or 1 skirt with pockets. I also started to wear dresses and skirts way more after I got some more with pockets, it's just weird to hear people who think that it makes the experience worse since that seems to me like you've just never experienced good pockets in a skirt.

I usually prefer to not have pockets in dresses and skirts. I also dislike uneven weight and feeling something flopping around, but my bigger problem with it is how it makes the garment look. Often, pockets change the line of the dress or skirt and it’s no longer as flattering. However, there are times when pockets work!

I love pockets in dresses so much! Mostly because that means I can easily wear them for work, where I usually run around with a big set of keys, my employee card, my big work phone (handheld landline phone, not mobile phone, though I usually also have my private phone on me). Imagine carrying all that while running across a big building to get a big binder from another office, or just walking to the cafeteria to get a coffee.

That dress looks great and I want one. I'm going to have to make one. Also, I just discovered your channel and I love it! About pockets: look at Bernadette Banner's video about pockets. There's a way to attach the pocket to the waistband to the skirt so that it doesn't flop around, which would work great in that dress. She also shows how to make historical detachable pockets, which don't move with the dress at all, but you would have to either have pocket slits inside your dress and wear the pocket underneath, or wear the pocket outside of the dress, kind of like a belt pouch. I love pockets.

Dirndls usually have at least one pocket. It shouldn't flop around because it gets attached just below the end of the bodice, which normally ends at the natural waist.
