Nice work on the gearbox. One thing is never wear gloves when operating rotating assemblies like lathes, mills, drill press. It's easy to forget that you are wearing gloves and can get your hand, fingers pulled into the rotating parts of the machine. I had my index finger twisted off my hand. Keep up the good work.

Wow, this is an awesome build! Personally, I wouldn't trust my life with one 1/4" keyway for the main gear, I would use a splined shaft, but still, great work!

Make sure of your materials correct heat treatment and hardware in that rotor box. Also need to check for run out in the bearings and shaft and gear mesh. This is from 35 years as an aerospace machinist and assembler. Always remember it is the little things that can bring you down.

this seems like a gearbox that is going to fail allot faster then he wanted. It scares me watching this. There's too much play between the teeth, how are the materials hardened? Things are never as easy as they seem.
Great gearbox but for a helicopter this scares me.

Nicely executed! One remark though - it's an engineering misconception that key slots carry torque. They don't or to a minimal extent. The big gear should be press-fit in order to generate enough friction to carry torque without slippage. TBH I don't know the level of torque you are transmitting but that gear is beefy. The smaller gear instead at least is loaded axially and can cope with the smaller torque. My two cents...
@ultralighthelicopter3 жыл бұрын
Thanks... Yes i get your point i will do a upgrade on the gearbox regarding torque slippage... stay tuned....

What a great project! But I have one question: Why do you use open bearings? Wouldn‘t shielded or sealed ones be much safer?
@jeanphilippepoirier61303 жыл бұрын
The gears are inside an enclosed housing. It is best to lubricate the bearings at the same time as the gear mesh. The questions is how the gear mesh is lubricated. We see some grease is applied during assembly. This is no where sufficient lubrication for operation. I strongly recommend oil lubrication. You will need an oil drain port, oil level port, and oil filler port. The oil filler port can be used to fit a breather. Not sure what will be the operating RPM. At very high RPM, it is common to have pressure lubrication over the gear mesh.
@brianb-p6586 Жыл бұрын
@@jeanphilippepoirier6130 helicopter rotors run at relatively low speed due to the large rotor diameter. I don't know the speed of this one, but under 500 RPM is likely.

Beautiful work, very well accomplished, ask what is the relationship between the pinion and the crown, so you can see at first glance it would be 7: 1 or less. I didn't like the sound of the pinion bearing very much, sorry. greetings and keep it up

one question you know that when you make lift your props like to life up your main shaft up to lift you up this up force will destroy your normal type ball bearing... you should use some type of bearing that can handle the force in that axis as well did you?

advice from an old machinery builder. Lube your press fits before assembly. It prevents galling. I am a little curious why you chose not to use sealed permanently lubricated bearings. Is that really all the lube those gears will get, that little bit you applied with a brush? I'm also a little curious about the gear engagement. It seems to be shallow by about 0.030"

There's no way i'd fly a helicopter with a homebuild gearbox.
@WeTrudgeOn3 жыл бұрын
I think that gearbox is going to be problematic. Almost all enclosed gearboxes that operate at that kind of speed are in an oil bath they are not just dabbed with a little grease. I'm pretty sure that is why the main reductions are done with belts on the Mosquito helis, this is a tried and very successfully proven design. It is also far more forgiving of slight misalignment than gear drives are. I plan on building the Furia heli but it will have six groove Vee belt pulleys instead of the main gearbox.
@ultralighthelicopter3 жыл бұрын
I will do a upgrade on it. I missed the point where the original plans for the furia recommend to use oil in the gearbox, but for me i will prefer oil . I like the mosquito design with the belts too, but as i stick with the furia plans i build it this way... and hopefully improving.... All the best for your furia build, i like to see some content in the future...
