Volatile - Memory which is lost once power is lost e.g. RAM, Cache, Registers Non-volatile - Memory which is not lost once power is lost. e.g. HDD, ROM RAM: Random Access Memory. This is large amounts off data being stored as the data being stored is most likely in use or about to be. Because of this RAM is large, contains GB of memory. This is where the registers fetch the location of data then once the address is specified the CPU can execute the data. RAM to CACHE to REGISTERS from the REGISTERS the data is executed. RAM is volatile. Your RAM can be viewed if you search for "Task Manager" on a Windows PC and clicking on the tab "Performance" and clicking on "Memory". ROM: Read Only Memory. Memory which is only needed to be read once by your CPU, normally this is the firmware; a program which loads the OS and you hardware therefore it has a low capacity such as MB. Follows the same logic as RAM: ROM to RAM to CACHE to REGISTERS from the REGISTERS the data is executed. It is non-volatile. This memory can only be read suggested by the name. CACHE: A type of memory that stores copies of frequently used data. Cache's can be located in a lot of places, naming a few: on your CPU, on a web browser on a game. It has a low capacity as well: MB/KB. Cache in a CPU is faster than RAM because it is located nearer to the CPU. 7:35 - Really helpful hierarchy pyramid in terms of speed and capacity.

Great video, but there's a minor quirk in the RAM section: The "sticks" that are depicted in the top right-hand side corner to visualize what a RAM module looks like are actually graphic cards (AMD Radeon R9 series), which is evident from the fact that AMD doesn't manufacture RAM.

Yeah practically speaking, I certainly use them interchangeably. Technically the disk is the platter and the drive the surrounding components (the R/W head etc), which combine for a HDD (hard disk drive). Not a big deal really!

Wait...... So if *memory* is volatile And *storage* is non volatile And main *memory* is primary *storage* ...... Main memory/primary storage is still volatile right?
@MrBrownCS6 жыл бұрын
Please don't focus too much on these terms as it'll drive you insane! ROM is the exception for main memory (the term primary storage isn't used much) as it is non-volatile. You'll find lots of areas of ambiguity in CS unfortunately
