Trains run right in front of & circle the brick buildings of this town that the railroad built! This is just like Thurmond West Virginia. This is coal country and the trains are in Matewan West Virginia. Norfolk Southern Railroad main line runs right through this town that is almost land locked. There is only one way in and one way out. Trains cut the town off and go through the flood walls. See the Google Maps picture in the video. This is Hatfield and McCoy feud area with history every where you look. The small town looks like a movie set to me. Check out the scenes I filmed here of the town. The Norfolk Southern Pocahontas Sub is busy here with numerous daily freights although the coal trains are disappearing. I came here looking for coal trains but only saw a few and I found that both of the coal spurs that leave Matewan have been recently removed. Most of the trains here are double stack intermodals and mixed freights. We stayed one night in the brick building that use to be the town hospital. The two track mainline is just behind the building and it was awesome to listen to the trains roll by in the night. While we were here it seemed like more trains ran at night then in the day. Listen in on 161.190 and 452.9375 for the EOT device. The best way to track trains here is by using the EOT frequency in your scanner and you will get about a 5 to 10 minute warning. The signals are no longer called out. I made a few other videos of this area including a video of an abandoned coal spur with the locomotive left behind and a video of train going through the Hatfield Tunnels on the west side of Matewan. I am working on another video of Williamson WV. Filmed August 5, 2021. Thanks for watching! Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

Your thumbnail immediately reminded me of Dunsmuir, CA, looking north toward the Amtrak station. Union Pacific tracks follow the Sacramento River through the canyon. The tracks turn to the left looking northbound, just like in your thumbnail. Dunsmuir is a crew change point, so the trains wind through the canyon slowly as they approach the town, especially from the north. You can hear the horn and the squealing wheels echoing off the hillsides for a few minutes prior to a train’s arrival. The town itself is built up the hill from the tracks and features cute Victorian and Queen Anne architecture, as well as old brick buildings like in your video. I believe that it’s a popular place to model for fans of the old Southern Pacific.

Hello from the UK. This really does look like a town that should have horses and not cars in the street! However, it is nice to see that this isn't a ghost town although clearly some of those shops in front of the railway are closed. I notice that the buildings are brick and concrete. I only comment as an Englishman, because so many of your houses are timber or part timber. This, still living, town has so much character. BTW: You show the ultimate dedication, more than travelling to these out of the way places, you interrupt your meal to film a train. That's dedication!

I wish I had known you were going there, I could have provided more on its more recent history since the 1977 flood that transformed the town. That largely deserted Main Street (the movie set) used to be US Route 52 between Williamson and Welch, WV until the Corps of Engineers rerouted the highway on the other side of the tracks and closed the tunnel under the railroad. That red firehouse you noticed is sitting on 25 feet of fill as is the rest of the Mate Creek subdivision built to hold relocated homes. Too bad you missed one of the double stacks. Thanks for taking a picture of my SD40 on the wall, I enjoyed that design work.

This is one of your best videos, along with Thurmond. Seeing the mountainsides covered with trees in the summertime juxtaposed with the railroad tracks and the long trains passing through is just amazing. The Wheeling & Lake Erie passed through my neighborhood several times a day as it hauls natural gas from fracking wells. One place I enjoy seeing trains is Ohiopyke, Pennsylvania. When riding the bike trail, it is either hard or impossible to see the CSX trains, but you sure can hear them, as if you are next to them. My best friend grew up in a little town on the Turtle Creek Valley east of Pittsburgh. The old PRR mainline still runs through there and you can see and hear the trains running through the main line. Hope you can make it out to Pittsburgh/Cumberland, MD. to make some videos.

I still live in western PA, grew up in Irwin, now live in Cranberry. No trains really near me, except conway yard now. I used to go down along the Youghiogheny river and watch trains all day long. Sutersville, West Newton, Dawson, Connellsville. No I'm lucky if I get to see them through downtown pittsburgh and up route 65.

Judging from the amount and strength of the door frame at 11:00, I think there was once a crane or hoist in that doorway used to bring bulk goods to the second floor for storage. I've seen rigs like that in MA as a kid. Great video; great slice of small town America!

@Bithiann
@Bithiann 3 жыл бұрын
I think it was probably because Thurmond has less people and perhaps it would have been harder to film in matewan, thurmond is in the new river area and was a coal town and still looks like it did in the 1920s also I would like to add there is only one way in and one way out so they probably could control the filming easier.

Yup, Im a rail fan and I like your videos. Occasionally I ask myself why I am a rail fan guess some of the best times I had as a kid were being down by the railroad tracks in the 60s and 70s. Listening to my dad's stories about his adventures when he was a kid and hearing the trains off in the distance at night. I would have loved to have worked for the railroad but, life took me elsewhere. Thanks for all the videos!

@WMAJ6 3 жыл бұрын
The movie Matewan was about the coal strike and the massacre in 1920. Many of the miners were WWI veterans just back from France and they dug a system of trenches on the mountains and had machine guns like they had used in France to fight against the Baldwin-Felts guards and the National Guard who were called in to restore order. The movie was actually filmed in Thurmond since the town there was abandoned and looked a great deal like Matewan with the buildings facing the railroad.
