The final goodbye. I'm crying, I'll admit it. These guys got me into listening and watching barbershop, and to finally see them win and end is the stuff of Disney movies. Farewell Main Street, you got me thru the hardest times, through high school, through the sleepless nights, and will forever be in my heart.

I adore this song and really appreciate this arrangement. I sang this to a good friend a year ago when she was sick with COVID. I was blessed to be able to take care of her in my role at work. She blessed me to allow me to be a part of her struggle and recovery. She cites me singing this as the brightest part of her confinement. Hearing this treatment of the song has brought bittersweet tears. BUT SHE'S DOING GREAT NOW!

Wybu RP yea I'm gonna disagree with you there. Last year like half of their songs were about how much they wanted the gold medal, and after a whole years work I'm sure 3rd place felt horrible. They may have stepped up their game but to say they weren't trying the past 6 years is an insult to them

What is the backstory? Why are some saying they are breaking up or were going to break up?
@NungarayHistory7 жыл бұрын
KnightErrant Music They had been at it for several years, and had recently run into difficulties with life getting in the way. The general consensus is that if they didn't win this year, they would break up because it was costing too much emotionally and financially to stay together as a quartet for another bronze or silver.
@rojachi78477 жыл бұрын
Albert Nungaray Thank you for filling me in. I wish them the best in life and congratulations on their win.
@syeofficial23517 жыл бұрын
Albert Nungaray Not neccesarily. Main Street went into the 2017 contest not worrying or even thinking they would win. Instead, they went to sing and hang fun. Im sure by the finals they knew they had a shot again, but they were breaking up because Mike (Bari) is moving or has moved to California and i believe the rendition of this song was in memory of the Bari's father, who had passed away. I love Main Street and im so happy they won the gold 😁

Andrew Cross not ambient, there were two or three mics behind the pit for audience sound.

Andrew Cross I wasn't there but I'm guessing the increased audience sound this year was due to both the venue and also the added side mics.

I get the impression the rigors of contest rehearsal was killing them in terms of their personal lives. AIC performances won't require half as much rehearsal time as they'll mostly be performing the old favourites (Plus one or two new Hine arrangements.) Keep your eyes peeled, Tony and Myron teaming up with Tim Waurick and Gary Lewis? ;)
@scottanthony84487 жыл бұрын
So, will three be enough? I certainly hope so, but the Society may wish to consider another revision to the the rule about repeat champs. If more adjustments fail to happen, "All-Star" quartets such as Main Street will continue to pop up.

Actually, as part of being the gold medal quartet there are certain performance obligations (e.g., MidWinter, Internationals next year) that they'd agree to. We just won't get to see them compete any more. I attended Vegas this year and it was spectacular! Interestingly enough, Signature was leading after the second round, but Main Street's final set overtook Signature.
@dmbirkeland7 жыл бұрын
Right you are, Jay. We will see Main Street in the AIC Chorus and on the AIC show for a few years. They aren't dead yet.
@cbstringham137 жыл бұрын
I usually like Main Street, but this song was difficult to hear and watch. I have sung this song with my own quartet, so I know the traditional arrangement very well, but this one seemed to throw in tricks just for the heck of it without any real rhyme or reason. Not only, but the song is called "Smile," and there was hardly any smiling going on! These guys usually do a great job of matching their performance with the mood of the song (especially Tony!), but they got this one all wrong. The pitches and harmonies were spot on, I just think it could have been a lot better. 6/10
@callumhubka33117 жыл бұрын
cbstringham13 I'm not familiar with the traditional arrangement but I think this was the best way to play it as this was (at that moment) presumed to be their last song they ever performed as a quartet which is sad for them, sad for the audience etc. It was sort of like "that old quartet of mine" except, unlike Boston Common who would have gone down in glory whether thy won that year or not as everyone knew they should have been the undisputed winners for at least a half decade, Main Street had spent years as good but not the best so they were saying goodbye to what they had loved but would actually die...
@cbstringham137 жыл бұрын
Callum Hubka Thanks for more of the backstory, that does change my perspective a bit. I guess I just really enjoy the "original" standard so much that this arrangement threw me a bit. If you want a good example of what I mean, search for "Smile" by Night Life. The traditional tag is a classic by any standard and is so fun to sing and switch parts on!
@treesarecool123456787 жыл бұрын
cbstringham13 the 'traditional' arrangement you're thinking of isn't a contestable barbershop song (I.e. There aren't enough homophonic passages or a high enough percentage of dominant 7th chords in the writing). To each their own, but I loved this.
@cbstringham137 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I didn't realize the requirements were so demanding for contest songs. Thanks for educating me! And yes, to each his own. I will say this, I liked the richness of Main Street's tone and I have always appreciated their work. I have loved Tony DeRosa since I met him back in 1999 when he was with Platinum (His voice as lead in "Bring Him Home" is the best version of that song that will ever be sung!). Main Street is a great quartet, and I am sad that they will be splitting.
