Fast, simple, easy to cook, and dearly loved by Russian people and many other post-Soviet nations - this is all about Olivier Salad (how we call it in Russia) or Russian salad (how the other world calls it). This is the main meal for the New Year's Eve celebration that is always flooding Russia at the end of December so I’m glad to share a part of my culture with you since it’s that time of the year.
Thank you for watching!💛

THE RECIPE:
for 3-4 people
3 eggs
3 potatoes
1 big carrot
250-300g of sausage
1 can of green peas
2-6 pickles depending on the size
mayonnaise
salt
Boil eggs, potatoes, and a carrot, and leave to cool down. Open the peas, drain the water, and leave them open to dry a bit. Cut all the ingredients into little cubes, add peas and mix to see if everything is enough. Add salt and mayonnaise. Decorate with greens on top and enjoy💛

Cucumbers in a brine is still a pickle! It's just a different way of pickling as it uses brine pickling versus vinegar pickling. 😊 Do you know if the recipe has a long history in Poland or was it something introduced to Poland from Russia during it's period under communist rule? I'm just curious. My Great-Grandmother fled the territory on her father's orders in the late 1800s because he & her eldest brother were involved in partisan activities against the foreign occupation of the time. She wound up in a small town in the US while her younger sister wound up in Paris France. I don't know of many Polish recipes though. Her Irish daughter-in-law, my Grandmother, wasn't exactly a great cook to begin with & was perfectly fine with slapping together anything that was edible. My Grandfather only spent time in the kitchen at the table to eat, read the newspaper with his morning coffee, read whatever sporting magazines had arrived that day & work on crossword puzzles. My Aunt made something she called "Polish Borscht" but it had a vinegary yellow broth, chunks of kielbasa, hard-boiled eggs, potatoes & carrots. I have no idea if it was a real recipe or something she just invented on her own. I doubt it's any sort of "borscht" though, that means beetroot in Russian, doesn't it? We saw no such thing anywhere near the table!

@@athelwulfgalland your aunt made Bialy Borscht or in Polish Bialy Barszcz . Bialy means white. It's more of an Easter soup using alot of Easter basket ingredients. It's a real recipe, not your aunt's original. There are variations in ingredients so there is Russian, Ukrainian and Polish Borscht recipes.

@@christinawrobel4869 That's really interesting! Thank you for providing the answer to a question which has been in my mind for over half of my life! My father & his sister, my Aunt, are no longer of this world. My cousins have scattered to the four winds of the Earth. Some still live but others too have joined those whom have passed before them. That leaves only my sister & myself who were seated at that table with whom I could share this interesting news. However she was far too young to remember anything about it. I think I will try to look up a recipe so as to reproduce the Bialy Barszcz broth. I remember the major ingredients but I will see what others typically add to it as well. In this way perhaps my wife, two adult age children & I can sit to a traditional Polish meal. As an aside, I don't keep much hope for this, but I was wondering if you know much about the origin of different surnames in Poland? While I'm pretty sure I know of the origin of my Great-Grandfather's surname I cannot say the same for my Great-Grandmother's surname. The name is Lezuchowski & I've been under the impression that this is based on the name of a village, township, county (the equivalent thereof) or region. However I cannot seem to figure out where that would be?

Nowadays, my sister makes it for the her Saint's day, too. There is a place here in Atlanta, Georgia that sells a lot of meats and other products from Europe (including Russia). They even ship all over the United States. I think they will sell to me the most authentic style of meat. Or I guess I can use something simple from the grocery store. But I will try it. Looks so delicious 😋. I am going home to visit my parents for New Year's. My father's parents and his whole family came to the United States from Lithuania, so I think I'll make it for him and let him know everything that you said about it! I'm sure they ate it, too. And it looks like something I'd love.

I've made my list of ingredients to make the salad next week. You and your family are lovely people, thanks for sharing. You and your husband are wonderful parents. Agatha is very bright. You give her the freedoms to explore and be included in cooking or other activities which grows her creativity. Be safe, I wish you all the very best. William Peppers, Frankfort, KY, USA.

In America Americans love mayonnaise based salads . We usually love eating mayo based salads in sandwiches like egg salad and chicken salad. We like potato salad as a side dish.

You can find Russian salad everywhere in Eastern Europe pretty much but the funny thing is I've heard people call it in so many different names depending on the country it's being made including Russian salad, French salad and American salad 😂😂 Thank you for the lovely history intro! ❤️

In the Netherlands and Belgium I think we call it "huzaren salade" or "salade russe"👍🏻 And it's soooo yummy 😋 Thanks for your video, I will try to make it on New Year's Eve too, my mouth is already watering 😅🙈 Living now in Germany since 2008 it reminds me a lot of potatoe salad over here 😋 Potatoe salad with Wiener sausage is traditionally eaten by many Germans on Christmas Eve 😁 And the end of the video was soooo cute, you're such a beautiful couple and family ❤

Omg in Mexico we make a similar salad. I also don’t like things to mayo-y so I mix it with some sour cream as well. So ours is usually with chopped up ham and instead of pickles, which is not commonly eaten by Mexicans, we put pickled jalapeños. If you like spicy I would totally suggest adding jalapeños! Since I was born in California I definitely love pickles and will try adding it to my salad next time!

In Poland, this salad is just called a vegetable salad. And it is present on a table during any important celebrations such as Easter Eve or Christmas, or any other family gatherings. Apart from all the ingredients you have mentioned, there is no meat added, but we add apples, celery - this white root stuff, and leak or onion. In Slovenia, where they also love it, it is called a French salad and there is no meat, no onion, and no apple, but otherwise all the same as in the Russian version:)

I am from Canada and we call this potato salad. We serve it usually in the summer for parties and gatherings more often than Christmas but I have seen it served at Parties during winter too. We add ham or bacon instead of sausage. I like to add a bit of pickle juice too. ❤ I also do not cook the carrot. I just peel and grate it. Not using too much. Some people add onion but I don’t.

Seems very tasty. We have a very similar meal in Hungary called 'Russian meat salad', just usually made with some boiled meat or this kind of sausage like yours (but it's named 'párizsi', taste must be different than russian version, idk). Thanks for this video! 😄

I‘m from Austrian and my Girlfriend is from Russia. After 3 years of relationship she has invited me last year to meet her parents and aunt for new year. Nevertheless I couldn’t understand what they talk (little bit english and broken with my polish/russia) i enjoyed the food a lot. Except one salad it was mixed meat with transparent gelatin it was horrible and everyone laughed except her aunt, because she loves it. Edit: Thanks for the video I'm going to do as surprise for my girlfriend when we live together next year :) Edit 2: While watching I recognized I know this salad from my polish parents, because they do it exactly same :D

Incredible - in Seville, southern Spain, we eat that salad all the time! In fact, I'd say it's such a famous "tapa". We call it "ensaladilla" or "ensaladilla rusa" - russian salad literally. How cool is that?! As always, amazing video, Vika!
