Rajani Murmu, a prominent tribal women's rights activist from Jharkhand, has made headlines recently for her outspoken stance against those opposing the implementation of PESA (Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas) rules in the state. Known for her fearless advocacy, Murmu has been at the forefront of the movement to secure tribal rights and empower women in marginalised communities.
In an exclusive interview with Main Bhi Bharat, Murmu condemned the activists resisting PESA rules, stating that they obstruct a historic opportunity for tribal self-governance. She emphasised that PESA is a powerful tool to safeguard tribal culture, resources, and identity. According to her, the opposition stems from vested interests that fear losing control over tribal land and resources.
Murmu also sheds light on the challenges faced by women in tribal society, where issues like displacement, exploitation, and lack of access to education and healthcare are rampant. However, she expressed optimism about the changing landscape, attributing much of this progress to the growing influence of Kalpna Soren, a tribal leader known for championing women’s rights. Murmu believes that Soren’s entry into politics has inspired more tribal women to raise their voices and participate in decision-making, creating a more equitable and inclusive society in Jharkhand.
