I did the wilderness 30 years ago. That was before You Tube and the internet and before so many hikers walking around with go pros and posting on You Tube. Oh yes back then it was a wilderness we just had a guide books. Thank for posting another video.

It was a great trip. The stay at Shaw's in Monson was an awesome experience as well!

You did exactly what I am doing this coming July. I will start at Monson, the 100 Mile Wilderness Cabins and head north. I followed you with maps in hand. I have hiked Katahdin the past three years so feel prepared for that but am open to any tips re: food, shelters, camera gear, etc. thank you in advance!

Jeff, this was my first chunk of the AT that I have experienced. It wasn't as much "wilderness" as I expected, but still beautiful. I appreciated the trail culture as much as the nature of the trail. If you are new to the AT experience, I would recommend using Shaw's Hiker Hostel in Monson. They are super accommodating and the people you meet and chat with while there will contribute so much to your experience. I left my truck there, had them resupply me on Jo-Mary Road, and then pick me up in Millinocket and bring me back to Shaw's.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have already been in communication with Phil at the cabins and he has been super helpful so far so will likely stick with him although I do hear good things about Shaw's. Looking at about 8 days, including Katahdin with a day or two of cushion if need be. Also will have the food drop at Jo Mary Road and the shuttle at the end. Yes, the Wilderness looks pretty active with hikers, that is to be expected though. The terrain looks fine (even pretty good), similar to what I am used to here in Nova Scotia. Did you hang your food each night?

I used an Ursack so I simply tied it to a tree. I had zero encounters with bears or critters. I slept in a tent each night and would imagine the shelters are pretty busy with mice. The southern end was much more challenging. I underestimated the climbing in the southern end based on my review of the topos and my experience here in the Adirondacks. There can be subtle stories, challenges, surprises, etc. hidden in between the contour lines! Great swimming throughout so I hope the weather is warm for you! I am performing my nightly internet binge which is helping me to be timely in my replies. Haha

That’s a tough one and very dependent on what gear you plan on bringing. I’m not a an ultralight guy, but have been dropping weight as a natural transition. My base weight is usually in the low 20s and 30-34 lbs with water and a week of food. I use a 60L bag so I can also use it in winter. I’m considering going down to 50L, but need to find a pack this size that can comfortably fit a bear can. Good luck!

Shaw's is an awesome place with awesome people! The first half has a little bit more up and down with some great views. The second half is more woods and lake country. I was resupplied by Shaw's at Jo-Mary Road which could be a good drop off location for you to head either direction.
