The first time I heard David Mallett was on "Spotlight on Youth" on Bangor, Maine, television over a half century before this video was posted. He and Neil Mallett were The Mallett Brothers. For me, it was between those two and The Beatles. My old hometown, Milo, and David's, Sebec, share a town line. So, for us, the duo, The Mallett Brothers, was local. A KZbin search did not turn up "No Deposit, No Return" by The Mallett Brothers; but if you ever get a chance to hear it, I suggest you do. It is my favorite by Neil and David. It has been a lot of years from that song to this one and I would say that the present selection is among David Mallett's best. His voice sounds as though it was on an upswing in 2016. Evidently, like Merlin, he wasn't aging: - he was youthening. I'll close this with a reference to David's other early twosome, Hinkley and Mallett. My mother left behind a note implying that Don Hinkley of that group (and later of Psaltery) was a family connection of my father. A KZbin search also did not bring up the Maine various artists collection, "After the Roundup." It has two tracks by Hinkley and Mallett, one vocal and one instrumental. Hunt up a copy if you can. It would be great to see a video of David Mallett talking about classic Maine musical figures, such as Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody, Yodeling Slim Clark, the great Dick Curless, Nelson Bragg "The Merry Mayor of Milo, Maine," and especially one of the greatest guitarists ever, Lenny Breau (formerly billed as Lone Pine, Jr.).
