Maine Winter - oil painting demo

Learn useful techniques on how I began this winter oil painting of some Maine barns in this video. I show you ways to grid your canvas to get accurate proportions to fit your subject into your composition. I first started this 18 x 24 inch canvas with a wash of Ivory Black to get some values down and then worked over that with the following palette: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Cadmium Red Light. When I'm at the beginning stage of an oil painting, I use turps to thin the paint.....mediums will come in later stages. The information I provide in this oil painting demo will help you in your ways of being creative with your own work.

Hi Bruce, I do hope you show us the later development of this one. Whenever I try to paint dark subjects, they end up looking pretty dull. I think it's because I take the shortcut of using PBr7 colors such as raw and burnt umber rather than mixing more saturated colors to get the browns, but I don't really know. Anyway, so glad to see that things seem to be back on track with your painting and life in general.
