On what basis is it decided whether or not a steam locomotive requires a ‘Banker’ to perform it’s duties? In the selection shown on this video, only two trains, Union of South Africa and (I think) Britannia did not have Banking assistance - all the other clips had diesels at the rear of the train!

The diesels also aswell provide insurance in case the steam loco fails on route to reduce disruption on the mainline.

At the other hand, it ist never useless having some extra motive power for the case...

I really enjoyed this video and it is of no concern to me if the banker diesel gave assistance or not . Timing is tight on the rail network and the acceleration of a steam loco on its own can be slightly ponderous by today’s standards and requirements .

Why do some of the trains have a diesel at the back and others dont?

Diesel are put on the back sometimes as with saphos trains for example the diesels can operate the central locking on the doors on the MK2's as the steam locos can't do that. Diesels also tag along for insurance in case the steam loco fails while on route & to assist in the shunting move when the charter train reaches their destination.

That's right. And i have to admit, that you have the shunting loco right in the right place at the front of the train when it ist necessary to leave the station in the direction you entered it before to reach a shunting track or something equally. Otherweise you have to uncouple the steam locomotive fromm the train, shunt it around to the opposite site and couple it onto the train again for the shunting operation. Puuh - too much action for so less driving backwards...
