You need to set something up so that when you do decide to weld anything its does fall all over you deck. I'm sure with Your mind you've already decided to figure out something out. I like your welding curtains made of cardboard to keep the wind off your weld. I recommended the same thing to a guy who was welding 2 feet from his buddy, to help them not get arc eye. LOL Just simple cardboard can be used for so many things. Have a good one Doug. You did a good job welding that up. great suggestion Doug, Man's search for meaning is an excellent book. I highly recommend everyone to read it. Definitely, One of my favorite books of all time.

I accidentally took a vocational welding class and became a welder after that. I built construction and mining machinery, it was fun. I moved to different trade and no longer weld no more. Every time I see someone welding that reminds me the time that when I was young.

Grommet holes in sail cloth, it would require milling on a 3/4 but putting the driver in a drill works so much better with the bonus of the cloth melting the threads to stop fraying

I admire your courage Doug! Splitting that pipe must not be an easy bullet to bite, amazing results! For your ladder, I use tennis balls. I cut around a seam and poke them at the ends. I also add self tapping screw if they fall.

Great video! That spool welder makes short work of aluminum fabrication.
@davidhall1779 Жыл бұрын
i believe its about time to fabricate some workbench supports. Truss style, im thinking a 3’ section of pipe to serve as main support, with a short section welded 90 degrees perpendicular to one end, split one of your sections of pipe and weld them onto the short leg. closest to the main beam grabs your rail from the outside and one on or near the bottom leg pushes against the insid of the lower rail. then a diagonal piece to reinforce over the entire length and Voiliolla, you got a set of these to hang off seekers rails making a fine stable and strong workbench for all your little projects. store them in the corner below decks when not in use.

So.. punching holes like you mention at 23:12.. I got a trick I used when my wife was making corsets.. chuck your punch into a drill press.. then spin punch and use that to cut your holes.. not only do you get easy holes, the friction also seals any synthetic fabrics, just like using a lighter to burn them. Give it a shot, you won't go back to a hammer to punch them ever again.

Well Doug, I really just love how you don't let a setback break you. And how your community helps you with the suggestion to do this. AND, how you can do all this on the boat. Fantastic foresight and planning to have the boat setup to do all this.!!
@markdevaney8380 Жыл бұрын
Doug, Instead of a bridle on the mainsail have you thought about rigging the top batten of the mainsail the way they do on a gaff rigged sailboat. Two halyards, the Throat halyard attaches close to the mast and carries most of the weight of the sail and the Peak Halyard that attaches way out on the gaff to adjust the sail shape.

What gas do you use for welding I’m not to familiar but I have a 75% argon mix 25% carbon dioxide bottle on my mug welder for welding metal but I got the spool gun to weld aluminum can I use that same gas for the aluminum or I need a different one
