When August rolls around, the heat of the summer brings on the migration of one of the most popular birds in the world. Kentucky, and most importantly, the Land Between the Lakes Woodland Nature Station is a stop for a charm of hummingbirds. These little world travelers pass through Kentucky in large numbers on their way south, and the Woodlands Nature Station hosts a month long celebration to allow visitors an up close encounter with these quick and colorful birds.

Clean the feeders every two days by dipping in a 30:1 water/bleach solution followed by a thorough rinse in warm water. When temps are above 90 degrees, clean every day. Hang the feeders in only shaded locations. We tried most feeder brands and much prefer First Nature 32 oz feeders with the slot feeding ports. Easiest to clean, built-in ant guard, and no hornets can get inside (like you see in this video). We maintain 25 feeders, all First Nature, and they last many years. Unlike saucer feeders, bottle feeders maintain a constant nectar level which the birds seem to prefer.

They are Sunbirds, not Hummingbirds there in the Philippines. www.nytimes.com/1997/01/21/science/new-species-of-bird-is-discovered-or-rediscovered-in-philippines.html

Sorry, they are sunbirds. The Phillipines do not have Hummers although it seems your tropical climate would be perfect for them, but it just isn't so. Hummingbirds are indigenous to the Americas. North, Central and South.

Do some humming birds not fly south for the winter? I filled my feeders in the the fall to see if the birds would stay. I didn't see any that winter but the fluid level in the feeders decreased? Maybe it evaporated.

Yes. Anna’s & Costas are year round in Las Vegas. I have about 8 here now. These and several other species are year ‘round along the California coast.

I meant the holes for the drink from the feeder are small so bees probably can’t get in, here in Illinois where I can I find them?

Why aren’t there bee guards on these hummingbird feeders? This video starts out with a shot of a bee crawling out of a feeder hole right next to a hummingbird about to drink. That is so detrimental to the hummingbirds. Feeders for the bee population can & should be set up nearby.

Hello, I have issues with ants, bees and wasps with the humming bird feeder, bees get inside and then they can’t get out and that’s terrible. Without killing ants and bees, what kind of bird feeder is best? I like yours since the jokes from which hummingbirds feed are small. How do you prevent ants and bees?

Hello Pratibha Shah, Perkey Pet makes an excellent ant stop gizmo ;-) I had those same problems for years and tried everything to keep out the ants - they always got around what I did and swarmed the bird feeders. You actually hang the feeder on this item they sell, which will hang where you hang your feeder, and no ant will cross it once you pull it open just a little - it's amazing! Just make sure there are no leaves or branches touching the feeder below the ant guard - or they will march right on to your feeder - (such incredible opportunists!) It will not dry up like a water mote or spill all over like oil or get everything stuck to it like 'tanglefoot barrier' ...( don't ask how I know all those other problems - lol) This can be found at many local stores: Perky-Pet 245L Ant Guard for Hummingbird Feeders When it comes to the bees they also sell bee guards to go into the holes where the hummingbirds eat from. They can also be found near the hummingbird feeders in the store or look on Amazon as well. I think the most important thing for us in feeding these wonderful creatures is keeping the feeders clean, so I often have to throw out some of the food in the feeder if they haven't eaten it about every three days, and clean them with a drop of bleach and lots of water and rinse rinse rinse :-) I love that you are just as concerned about the ants, bees and wasps... They all have their place don't they and I appreciate them as you do! I think I will look up bee feeders now as I think they need water and food as well - they look so busy and happy in this video and like they must need nourshiment as well? Well looks like I have a new thing to research now. Hope this helps, and that your day is good :-)

Try spreading a thick layer of petroleum jelly on the rod, branch, hook, or wherever the ants are accessing. It stays on a while and I found they won’t try walking through it. There are some bee guards for the HB feeders but nothing is 100 percent. I occasionally get tiny flies in mine. Honeybees aren’t likely to get in feeders. More likely yellowjackets, like the one seen emerging from the feeder in this video. They are truly vicious and murderous creatures, unlike bees and even most hornets and wasps, which are far more beneficial than harmful.
