I love your top tip of keeping the card INSIDE the hive! Mighty! I have a few different coloured drawing pins. White, Yellow, Red, Green and Blue. I stick one of these outside the hive to remind me how old my queen is. Sometimes when you keep records her age gets lost in the mix. Speaking of getting cold and crusty - How's the weather treating you there today?

Hi Tuath, Great tip about using drawing pins, I should include that one in a video this season. It's stopped snowing but it is very cold. Lots of black ice and the footpaths are treacherous. Stewart

Thank you for your videos. They are full of tips and great information! Have you made the video about the queen assessment and selecting a new queen for rearing? I searched through your videos but wasn't able to find it.

Enjoyed the video. Will be watching more closely. We have 2 hives. 1st came because we set out a trap. And the other we purchased. Will there be a difference in pest treatment, feeding. This is the third year we have had bees, but 1st for actually having them in a man made hive. The hives are about 3 weeks in age different, and the 1st hive is so much larger and stronger than the second. Enjoyed the lesson.

Hi Cindy, Thanks for commenting. I treat each hive individually for both pest treatment and feeding. Assess if they need treatment and don't just treat regardless of whether they need it or not. Feeding is not quite so much of a difference, just feed them to make sure they have plenty of stores to go through the Winter. Good luck with your beekeeping. Stewart

Hi Stewart. Checked my hives today taking on board your inspection spreadsheet details. My one problem is finding eggs. It is early summer down in NZ and the bees are buzzing. Plenty of capped brood, larva and bees. Is there simple method of locating eggs on the frames? Cheers - arthur
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Arthur, Thanks for commenting and asking a great question. Whenever I struggle with spotting eggs the first thing I do is scan for capped and open brood on a well covered frame. Shake the bees off gently and then start looking at the brood. Start by looking at the capped brood and then work your way towards the largest open larvae, continue looking at the larvae and watch as they get smaller. Smaller means younger and if you keep looking along the smaller and smaller larvae you will probably find eggs at the point the larvae are almost so small as to be invisible. Failing that, you will have to do what I sometimes do and that is to put on my reading glasses! Something I think I shall have to do more of next season! Stewart

hi stuari on your oxalic treatment video you have used a flask i have seen you not so post to use a metal container only porcelain or plastic for mixing any further comment please
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 7 ай бұрын
Hi Geoff, It's a stainless steel flask and keeps the OA solution warm. The solution is only in it temporarily, perhaps for just a couple of hours so I don't think it does any harm. It never seems to make any difference in terms of the efficacy of the treatment and it certainly does appear to have damaged the flask in any way. Good luck with your beekeeping this Summer. Stewart

Hi Stuart I have a question regarding the "ranking" that you apply. As you are going through your apiaries, you may come across a good queen that you assign an "A" to. Then, you go to another apiary (or even the same apiary later in the year) and find a much better performer. Wouldn't this ranking be better allocated at the end of the season when you have all of the performance data available? I'm probably jumping ahead to your queen rearing topic, but, do you use the latest ranking from the previous year or some sort of average score to indicate which queen(s) you want to breed from?

Any Vidio showing how to deal with mould on brood frames.?.

Hi James, Mould from overwintered colonies usually fall into the cut out and clean category for me. There's not much point in spending too much time trying to recover them. For me, it's quickly to replace and renew. Regards Stewart

Thanks Stuart. How many hives do you start a season with? I tend to write War and Peace for my records - but then I only have the one hive at the moment.

Hi IcemanMobile, With a decent Winter I should start the new season with 50 colonies, way too many to remember exactly what I see in each one. I tend to remember the good ones and the poor ones mostly. Stewart

Hi Stewart. Really enjoying your videos even though I've been keeping bees for 7 years. I wish they had been around when I first started. A question re the iPad in the apiary. Does the touch screen work through the griffin case and your vinyl gloves as well ?
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo
@TheNorfolkHoneyCo 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Helen, Thanks for commenting. Yes the ipad and griffin case works really well with the nitrile gloves that I use. The only time I have problems is when I wash my gloves between inspections and don't dry them properly and the wet fingers slip on the case. Stewart

Do you think you could share a copy of that spreadsheet? I have about 30 colonies and need to have a better way. I’ve been looking at options but I plan on using my iPad much like you are using. Hopefully that isn’t asking too much. Thanks

Hi John, thanks for the comments. The spreadsheet will be available as a download on my online courses website in the coming months, once I get myself organised. If you would like a copy prior to that could I ask for a small contribution via my patreon web page and I would be happy to share. Stewart

Hi Daniel, I use my iPad for maintaining records but have been using handwritten notes and then transferring them this season. Not an astronomer, unfortunately, if only I had the time! Stewart
