As much as I'm liking your video, what you refer to as a "font" is actually the "BURNER". The "FONT" contains the FUEL.

That's right...

Agreed. The font holds the fuel.

And on an oil lamp you have a chimney not a globe.

Good and helpful info. As you likely know a frozen wick can be freed by putting some kerosene in the lantern. Never try and turn the raising mechanism on a dry wick and certainly not on a frozen wick. Just yesterday I freed an Aladdin 23 that had been dry for decades and would not budge. I soaked the burner for about 15 min in a can filled with kerosene and it then moved freely.

This is probably the best lantern basics video on youtube.

Very informative! Thank you. Power went out last winter for too long. I bought a Dietz lantern with the cooking attachment this year, just in case.

Safety wise, one of the advantages of the Hurricane Lantern, over the Lamp, is that the Hurricane Lantern will self-extinguish, if it falls over.

Thank you so much. The detail is perfect and I was able to clean up a lovely old Dietz that a neighbour gave to me. :)

Remove the globe, and tilt the globe holder to the side to get to the burner.

Hi, Im wondering if I can use a 3/4 inch wick in a lantern that originally has a 7/8 inch wick?

Do you store the dietz lanterns with kerosene in them, or do you suggest that they be fully drained and dry for storage?

there are 2 old lanterns in one room camp in the woods that were my dads (camp was his too) they r over 50 yrs old. dont know if they b worth fixing up or not. any advice?
@SurvivalExistence6 жыл бұрын
As a general rule, most old lanterns have little value, but there are some exceptions. Railroad lanterns that can be directly linked to a particular railroad by its stamping on the metal top or by etching on its globe can be valuable. That being said, the value of these lanterns is mostly in its globe / glass and next, in its font and burner. Antique carriage lanterns are also very valuable. (Please, if you have an old lantern that does have value, don't "clean it up" to remove the natural patina. That takes value from the piece.) If you are talking about a standard lantern, sadly, no. If you have to do anymore than replace the wick to make it serviceable, its not worth the cost. Bobby

Karen, Yes they are worth fixing. Every time you use one you can be reminded that your dad enjoyed them decades ago.

Absolutely spruce them up. They just don’t break. Your grandchildren will be using them.

I've noticed no one in these Dietz lantern videos seems to know how to remove the globe. The lever for raising and lowering the globe has a hinge at the opposite side to allow tilting the globe and wire cage toward the rear. Lower the globe lever, lift the spring holding the globe and tilt the globe and cage past horizontal to easily remove the globe. This also makes it easy to twist out the burner for service or wick replacement.

What am I doing wrong?? The wick on my lantern is burning out REALLY quickly. I mean, I light it and within 60 seconds it burns out. Any advice?? When I was a kid at the cottage, my grandmother would light the lantern and it would burn all night long until the morning.
@mikafoxx27172 жыл бұрын
Little late, but that means the wick isn't getting enough fuel. Either the wick is too short, fuel too low, or the fuel you're using is too viscous.
@jungleno.2 жыл бұрын
Someone probably used cooking oil or some other heavy oil that doesn’t wick very well. This would cause the wick to get clogged. I recommend replacing the wick and using a quality lamp oil. You should be good to go. Don’t use kerosene in the house. It’s too too smoky and You’ll get suit on your ceiling.
