Would it? This method eliminates several tractors and silage trailers. Obviously it still has to be hauled, but there's much less pressure to get it all in right now, unlike the conventional method. We do our own chopping into a dump wagon and trucks, but I do like this concept.

It’s amazing how far farm machinery as come since I was a teenager cutting silage and hauling it to the silo. Rolling the silage saves a fortune in storage facilities. You can store the bails just about anywhere. No more expensive silos to build to store extra food for your cattle. I doubt that plastic wrap is cheap though.

I love this concept. Silage is chopped, packed (baled), wrapped and sealed all within minutes. The very best full-scale custom operators with pits/piles/bunkers would have the silage exposed to air for several minutes after chopping, until the next load comes in. This stuff would begin fermenting almost immediately while eliminating a lot of the labor required with conventional chop-and-haul methods. It might not work very well on large farms, but for smaller operations it looks great. And I'm sure the plastic doesn't tear easily as long as the operators/handlers act sensibly -- if it did, no one would be doing this, because even a small amount of oxygen exposure would cause severe molding of the bale.

i really like how pragmatic brilliant ideas are handled in farming. That baler was like someone in R&D tinkering "If we take a one of our field transport cars and let it feed directly into a baler and have a wrapper behind it, we have compact system, optimizing the product flow! I gotta get in contact with the prototype-shop!" and it was born. then a farmer said: "hold my beer, i don't want to be reliant on a 2nd man and tractor, i will simply fumble a PTO gearbox to my Forage harvester!". There will be enough cons, why this isn't the gold standard solution for everyone, but it is a working solution born by out of the box thinking without annoying idiots talking everything into the ground.

What’s the benefit of wrapping small bales vs piling and compacting in large silos? You still mix it with other feed before giving it to the cows correct? Do these ferment faster? Less waste?
@hughmarcus1
@hughmarcus1 3 жыл бұрын
No. They’ll actually cost more than clamped silage. Round bales are very common in Europe though. As you’ll notice that patch of Maize is surrounded by grass. Maize silage is expensive to grow in Europe so it only forms part of the diet. That advantage of the wrapped bale is that you can add one to a diet feeder without the hassle of wastage from a clamp face.

Maize(field corn) at the stage here being cut is not as 'rigid' as the plant being cut for silage would be at a drier stage in development. Plus it appears that the front tires of the machine are riding over the cut stalks, but I could not tell exactly if that is the case here.

South Eastern Colorado. What is the equipment cost? We cut and haul silage 10 to 20 miles to a pit. After it’s wrapped it still must be moved. Does it unroll like hay fed from a truck? If it does I see a business opportunity for ranchers who need winter feeding. If not, this is extremely expensive feed with no financial benefit.

Maybe so if you own a silo. If you do not, it makes the feed portable and might be cheaper than building a silo. An ag bag would be cheaper, but not as portable. I am thinking this would be useful for a farmer who may have a number of small fields miles away from their cattle operation - too far to run silage carts down the road.

Second row tires do not require any threading and they can fail without any equipment downtime. So it's a good choice they made to use them up until failure.

On a serious note, what is the moisture content of the corn before harvest? It cannot be at 80% which is the common practice, than it is stored in bunker to get the desired mositure of around 40% after 3 weeks. Over here I think, the moisture level must be way low to have the corn harvested and bailed in one go.

Great vid. Maize(field corn) in the Netherlands. WOW P.S. Would be a slower operation in parts of the United States because the corn plants would be planted thicker and would be higher(higher yield).
@mattjones424
@mattjones424 2 жыл бұрын
That was my observation too... that is a very sparse field compared to what you see in the US. Locally we see yields average 20 tons an acre, with some as high as 30 tons.

why would you slow down a piece of equipment worth 1/2million bucks with a bale wrapper? May be an expensive concept on small farm scale where there is little acreage left once the headlands are off. But to be honest: the same operator is actually using large volume trailers while making a few bales at the same time.
