Seated position is the most important starting point as it affects everything from speaker placement, screen size, screen placement etc. Great video as always mate.

Those recommended screen size tools are a good starting points but shouldn’t be the deciding factor. When I built my home theater these tools said a 90” was the biggest I could go. I taped up a 90” on my wall and it didn’t look big enough. I ended up with 125” and never looked back. I did spend quite a bit more for a projector with lens shift but it was worth to accommodate the largest screen possible. You hit it on the nose. It’s what ever looks good to you!
@djparra412 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. I sit 10 foot away from my 120 inch screen and it looks absolutely perfect to me as well as almost everyone that came over. However, there were two people out of 20 that I’ve shown that say it’s just a little too big at that distance so I guess you could say there’s a 10% chance it may be a bit much for some.

1. Measure the 3 dimensions of your screening room. 2. Pick the largest size screen or TV that will fit. Usually screen width x 1.5 is a good place to sit for sweet spot.

My setup is in my recroom with just slightly lower ceilings and average sized room. I currently have a 106" screen which is fine but I will definitely be going up to at least 120" when I upgrade. Before I got the screen I just blasted it at the wall at about 140" and it was glorious but with the lower ceilings it was just getting to the point where things on the coffee table were in my sightline. Buy the projector first and play around with different sizes and distances before committing to the screen but you'd be surprised how big you can go in a given space. Thank you so much for these videos!

That’s not the only problem. I recently got an 86 inch tv QNED and it is too bright in a dimly lit room. At lower than 20 brightness things start looking dull. The sheer size of it makes it hard on the eyes. Also it is very overwhelming. Sometimes you just want to relax and watch tv not be fully immersed by a gigantic screen. Bear in mind I have taken RTINGS recommended size for my viewing distance which is over 12 feet or 4.2m.

I have an 83" Sony OLED and I sit about 7ft from it as that's all the space I have in my apt. Its massive for this room and I love it! The only thing that sucks is lower quality content. For the most part, any streaming is wonderful. I love sports and most of the time, it's not 4k. So a big screen sitting close really shows the pixelation.

@UCsSO6BRlGCvVJ4rNBZpOBqQ yeah great point! I'm a few months in using my 83" as my main daily TV and while I love it, I also love my 55" in the bedroom. I feel the budget systems are still way better than sound bar out there (space permitting)

Sports are my only complaint and that's not on the TV other just going smaller screen size for sports. The couple college basketball games that were broadcast in 4k for march madness was truly amazing. I remember back in the 80's when we had a 26inch cabinet tv and we thought that was big until i saw a 40 rear projection tv and i thought that was huge. By the way, the cabinet for those things were the equivalent of a wardrobe cabinet. Then there were the 50 and finally 60 inch ones that again at that time was huge. Tv's nowadays are so advanced compared to then. You could literally sit just a few feet and see everything nice and clear with the new flat tv's and also with the new 4k projectors, where as before you had to sit at the back of the living room just to get a good picture. Now in my living room i have a 75inch above the fire place, and a 120 inch rise up screen with a 4K projector and i'm about 10 feet away and everything is clear and sharp.

I sit 12 feet away from my 150 inch projector on a wall without a screen. I feel that this is the perfect size and distance but the back of my head ALWAYS questions :"Should I sit closer or go for a bigger size"? Not that it will benefit much, but I love the idea of sitting inside a movie theatre doing whatever I'm doing on my PC. But having an 150 inch projector doesn't give me that "Movie theatre" or "iMAX" experience yet. Although it's getting close, but not quite do you know what I mean? I used to sit about 15 feet away from the 150 inch projector and I clearly felt the urge to move closer most of the time, the screen size was too small and it almost bothered me. So trust me, bigger is ALWAYS better. Unless if you try the biggest size possible you will never imagine how greedy you get with screen sizes. P.S I sit 2 feet away from a 55 inch OLED TV for gaming on my desk too. The experience is MIND BLOWINGLY GOOD!

I could have got a 150" dia screen in the room but I don't like having to scan left and right of a screen and there is a nausea factor to such large screens at point blank. I would say you have to big of a screen if the center of your screen makes you look up. I see all of these screens mounted above fireplaces and it makes your neck hurt looking up all the time. The center of the screen should be directly at eye level that is why theaters have tiered seating. So, its not the distance from screen any more but the height.

Everything he said was accurate, but he did miss one point that I think is overlooked by many people while purchasing TVs. I have a theater room which you can see on my channel. And while I love watching movies down there, and gaming is fantastic. I would not want it to be the only TV in my house, or even the main TV in my house. If you go with a true home theater audio solution (AVR and separates) this just exacerbates the problem. We have a 75-inch QN90A paired with a Q950A Soundbar in the living room. And it is great for General TV watching, movies, and gaming. The problem with the 85-inch and home theater system downstairs is, it is just too immersive for everyday TV watching all the time. Whenever we come out of the theater room both my wife and I feel like we've just come from a play or a movie theater. It's GREAT🥳🤤🤯...but you're TIRED 🥱🥱😴. We do sit closer to the screen in the theater room than we do in the living room, just because of the way the rooms are set up. But we did have the 85" in the living room for the first few days, and it was still overwhelming after a while. Of course do what you want, but don't think 75" won't do the trick. Especially if you're going with a very bright TV. Just my two cents, if I had to do it over again and could only choose one, I would definitely go with a 75-inch over the 85. And put the additional money into the best Soundbar you can afford (don't buy the Samsung soundbar unless you have a Samsung TV, the screen on top of the sound bar will drive you insane🤬). Upgrading your sound system gives you an immersion effect that you can control based on the mood and time of day, as opposed to a screen size which is always going to be the exact same size no matter how you're feeling.

Honestly, everything I've read says that the new Epson laser projectors are very similar, with noticeable but not essential upgrades to image quality as compared to the 5050UB. Closer to 4K pixel shifting, better HDR performance, and laser light source that will last the life of the projector. So I think if you don't already own a 5050UB, you can sort of assume that reviews of that projector are comparable against something like the Viewsonic.

@@a1racer441 In your own space is the key, if you're torn between the two I would go with the larger one 1st. As counterintuitive as that may sound based on my previous comment. Here's the logic behind that, if you get the 83" and are happy with it, and everyday viewing is not an exhausting reality then great keep it and no harm no foul. If it's too big you can box it up and return it for the 77" and you're good to go. But if you get the 77" first, you will have a question in the back of your mind about whether or not the 83" would have worked that will lie unresolved and every time you see a review with the 83" it will be a question whether or not you made a mistake. On top of which if you get the 77" and then take it back and get the 83-inch and then realize the 83" is too big, you'll have to do a second box up, and a 3rd install just to get back to where you were in the first place. I returned both the upstairs and downstairs sets (one audio issue, and one DSE ) and know the process can be exhausting. Hope everything works out for you😉

To reply to that question let me ask this: For those like me who have several vintage TV series and movies which they often watch but which will likely never be issued on anything better than the DVDs they have, will this OLED-in the 48" size and viewed at least 8 feet away-make their well commercially produced and pressed TV shows and movies look any better than Sony's top model OLED from last year, played on something like my Oppo 95? Also, has anyone used software scalers, like Jinc-built in to JRiver or madVR? If yes, which setting on which scaler made your best DVDs look their best? So yes, content resolution quality, screen resolution (e.g. 720, 1080, 4K) and viewing distance are at least three major factors impacting how large a screen you can choose without making your content look pixelated and otherwise sad looking.

As long as you get native progressive signal out from the Dvd player.. the TVs processing unit specially a Sony one ..would make an excellent job scaling the content.

No. I've got a 150 inch ust in my living room. Would prefer if it was a tv that size

Chris I agree with everything in this video. I always tell people the buy the biggest screen they can afford regardless of room size and seat distance. One bit of side advice. Raise your center channel so that it is just below the bottom of the screen. It’s too low right now. I recently put my Definitive center speaker on a computer monitor stand so it points right to my seated ear level and dialogue and center imaging improved dramatically.

If u watching 4k content u can sit pretty darn close to a big screen. The problem is lower res content.

Judge me by my size do you? Size matters not! 😜😂😜 On a more personal note isn’t it more about how you use it? 😜 In all seriousness doesn’t it just boils down to how far away you (the viewer) sit from the TV/projector in the first place? So for example if you want an 83 inch you then have to work out how far back your couch/seating has to be so that you’re not exactly sitting on top of it metaphorically speaking.

People stare at computer screen a foot away from them every day at their jobs. Screens needing to be a certain size was something stores said back in the day because of pixel size. 4K is the SOLE reason screens got bigger. and now with 8K the size has no limits. The average human eye cant even fully see 8K

You said you have a 120” screen and sit 7 feet away? But you have a laser projector. If you had 120” LCD tv and sit 7 feet away, even at 4k, wouldn’t you see the pixels?

IMO, 55 inches is the sweet spot for a mixed viewing experience. If you watch a lot of classic TV (as I do), the larger screen sizes expose too many flaws in older 4:3 content and it looks horrible.

@jeffrey bankers I have one in my media room. Upscaling only goes so far when you're talking about standard def tv that hasn't been remastered.
@raphaeldelaghetto852 жыл бұрын
@jeffrey bankers Yeah ok. The shit’s not magic. They’re not making 480 content look good on 65 inch TVs and larger.
@raphaeldelaghetto852 жыл бұрын
@jeffrey bankers I’m sure whatever showroom you visited played some content specifically selected to make you think that, but I have 2 of the latest Sony Bravia TVs with this upscaling tech and it only goes so far. The larger the screen size you have, the more the limits of the upscaling are exposed. Especially on 480p/i content. I tried watching dvds and streams of some 80s and 90s sitcoms, as well as some 90s NBA content on my 65 inch Bravia, and they all looked better on my 55 inch set, despite it being a lower tier model. They also looked better on the 12 year old, 50 inch plasma in my bedroom. Why? b/c those smaller sets are ultimately “stretching” those fewer pixels over a smaller area.
@raphaeldelaghetto852 жыл бұрын
@jeffrey bankers Sony marketed that it was included in their bravia series from last year but it’s important to keep your expectations in check for lower resolution, un-remastered content on really large screens.

On a side note for screens (and room), has anyone considered using Black 2.0 or other available Vanta Black alternative Paint, or foam (leaning towards foam now)..for light reflection around the screen?
