Heya, i know this video is a bit older, but i started watching it and saw the issues you were having with the weight planning and balance, and didn't see anyone else mention it. The Q400 is very much a nose heavy aircraft dry, so you tend to want to keep PAX in a bit more towards the rear, but the main thing is you would normally put all the cargo in the rear. The fwd cargo is really about the size of an airliner toilet space.. its like a closet. IRL its generally only used to hold the flight crews stuff, or its left empty. In your example you would have wanted to really put all 759 in the aft cargo.. or you could to 700 in the aft and 59 in the fwd... Anyways, you may have picked that up by now, but for others that might be watching this for the first time, hopefully it helps

Thank you for the video. Just got a call from a company who operates the Q400 and will need to go through training soon. That definitely helps in order to figure out how things will look like once it starts.

oh and AHRS stands for "Attitude and heading reference system", basically a bunch of sensors and a computer used to figure out what your airplane is doing in a 3D space. Kind of a high end electronic gyroscopic system.

Realllllyyyyyyyyyy wonderful stuff....this is the forth time I have gone over it having dl'd it to my ipad...THIS time...I actually went through it WITH you with me in my cockpit! Thank you soooo spending so quality time with us to help us into the Q400....up until this time my Tubeliner of choice was the NGX. You did such a terrifically complete and sniffly presentation!...I have to remember to be as complete as you on mine. BTW, I got confused about Flows/vs Checks....below is a great presentation by our pal, Chris Palmer over at Angle of Attack. Here is what I took away from it...and I've been simming for over 30 years...my problem?...I am wrongly self-taught...and I didn't get serious until two years ago...so my simming is now a process of not only learning new stuff(keeping my 70 year old LMS[Life Management Computer]... oiled), but to UN/re-learn many things. Anyhoo...re: ATA's explanation of Flows vs Checklists... I say, "so what if you used check and flow interchangably"....the most important thing is NOT in your vernacular, its in what you taught us to DO. And that is the point...we learned from YOU that: Check/Flow is what you DO.... the CHECKLIST not presented here...and rightfully so...is checking what you are sposta have DONE... By going through the Checklist(which is read, I understand, by your FO in the real world), you physically touch everything mentioned in the list...one by one...in other words...you are checking your flow/checks...grinn... to make sure you really DID what you were sposta DO! Here is the piece by Chris on Flows VS Checklists... www.flyaoamedia.com/aoa/the-mystery-of-flows-vs-checklists/ Thanks again for getting me so adroitly and charmingly into my Dash 8 cockpit!! Greatfully, Chas

+hesynergy Chas. Thank you for your reply, it is a wonderful feeling indeed to know that I have helped someone as extensively as you say I have helped you. One of the things Majestic did right was to input the flows into the manual. I cannot say the same for most others, but I truly enjoyed being able to put the Dash 8 into such precise terms in a tutorial. I am thrilled that the video was so helpful to you. I will definitely check out the link you gave me as soon as I have a moment. Keep us updated on your progress, and let me know if you have any requests for other tutorials. Captain_Mac

Tried following along with you as you performed the dark and cold checks. Are you using an expanded checklist? I have Majestic's MJC8 Q400 Cockpit prep rev 1.0 and MJC8 Q400 Normal Checklist rev 1.02 from Majestic web site. For instance, after you check all circuit breakers In, you then check landing gear handle down and then HYD PTU and so on. I don't see HYD PTU check anywhere on my checklists. Hydraulics are not mentioned on the Normal checklist until AFTER Start. And the STBY HYD and PTU aren't mentioned until CLIMB - PNF. Am I missing something?
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 8 жыл бұрын
+eharvey650 When I did the cold and dark tutorial for the Q400 I used the Majestic Software Q400 Delivery Tutorial. You will find it in the documents section of your Q400 Installation. I used this rather than just the checklist as it is a more thorough representation of Q400 operations (at least it's supposed to be). In Chapter 9 "Preflight - Aircraft Setup / Before Start" item #8 is verification that the STBY/PTU Pumps are off. For some reason the checklists provided don't follow the flow of the delivery tutorial which seems to be more intuitive. I'm not sure why that is, but I would recommend using the delivery tutorial to create your own checklists. Hope this helps.

Just got the Q400 into P3D, so I watched your video to assist with the basics. Great watch and very helpful. You mention at one point you kind of didn't like the way the circuit breakers couldn't be closed on the virtual cockpit panel, only opened. I seem to remember someone at PMDG before mentioning that excessive click spots hits frame rates badly, so I wondered if this was why it was done that way. Great aircraft though, glad I have finally got round to using it and thx for the guidance here.

Love the video. I'm just learning the Majestic Dash 8. In your vid there's clicking noises as you move around the cockpit. Are you using TrackIR? And are you using it in conjunction with EZDok? I downloaded a copy of flybee virtual airline Dash 8 SOP that they use and it's flow seems much different than the way you performed it. Very nice video.
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 8 жыл бұрын
+eharvey650 Thanks for the compliments! I am using EZDok, and sometimes I use TrackIR, but not always. The clicking sounds are from the EZDok camera setups, and perhaps the really loud keys on my keyboard ;-) I don't know about flybee virtual. I suppose the question is where flybee got their flow checklist from. The one I used was that which was provided by Majestic with the Dash 8 Q400; Majestic claims it was written by a real world Q400 Pilot. That being said, every airline, in the real world and virtual, has different SOP's. As long as the flows you are using cover all of the necessary items, it really doesn't matter if the order is a little different. Now...let's be clear, there are some things that MUST be done in a certain order, such as the power on and off sequence of the batteries. But other than those few things that are order specific, the rest is just part of the process and a different order means nothing.

If you left or right click a cockpit button/switch and hold it then move your mouse off the button/switch and let go of the mouse button, FSX "holds" that button in place so you can look around. It's a great feature for when you need to do some of those checks that would otherwise require some inventive view positioning (i.e. ADC tests in the Dash 8). To turn the switch/button back to its resting state, simply give it a single left/right click.

Finally got the PC I've been waiting for, ready for 3 monitors (overhead, center pedestal, main panel), starting from FSX steam, from scratch. All I want to do is dedicate it to the Q400 pro edition, and general aviation to stay IFR current. Ok guy, the million dollar question: what ATC / flight planning dlc's are critical?? I've been out of the sim game for so long and have 10 years of DLc's to sift through (pretty intimidating!). Thanks for your help guys, and this tutorial was awesome. Cracked open a beer, got comfy, enjoyed the whole thing. Can't wait to get into the sim!!
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 8 жыл бұрын
That's an exciting time indeed spitfire4! The Q400 pro edition is one of the best addons I have ever experienced. Very complex and fun. As for other addons. I highly recommend PFPX for flight planning, and if you like, get the TOPCAT addon. I do NOT do the PFPX subscription, just the one time purchase and updated it with NAVIGRAPH. I also recommend a NAVIGRAPH charts subscription. You can get the FMC data and Charts together for a yearly fee of around $70 US. As for ATC, well that has been a bugger to me for some time. The ATC addons in general aren't very good. The ones that work good have horrible voice overs in my opinion. Probably the best ATC options are VATSIM or IVAO which are online programs. Those two are free and then there is Pilot Edge, which is also online, but is a subscription based ATC. There are a number of reasons I do not use them, but mostly because of copyright issues that have come up with their use from other KZbin channels. I'm glad you liked the tutorial. I took more time to make this one than any other I think...that speaks to the depth of this A/C. Let us know how the setup comes together :-)

nicely done man !! i like it .. but have a question about the FLOWS download on the majestic site... i can't find them there. in the inslall folder from p3d v3 simobjects/... are a lot of docs but no flows there too. so is there an other way to get those flows ?
@CaptainMac

+johnnyxthemacnifient I used the Majestic Software Q400 Delivery Tutorial. You will find it in the documents section of your Q400 Installation. This is where I found the Captain's and First Officer's originating checks which are the flows. You can also make a flow that works for you. A flow is just the organized manner in which you cover checklist items from memory and then go back and verify with the checklist that you completed them. Hope this helps.

This video is rather old, so this is probably pointless, but DISC for the condition levers I believe on these refers to literal "discing" of the propellors, putting them flat against the direction of travel to act as a brake, or provide no thrust in beta.
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 7 жыл бұрын
KiriyaAoi thanks :-)
@FanjitaUK2k8
@FanjitaUK2k8 7 жыл бұрын
I'd just like to add that your belief is correct, discing is the propeller pitch being in a position where there is minimal torque required to rotate the propeller. It has the added benefit of creating a tremendous amount of drag, which is so effective ground beta (or reverse) is rarely used to slow down.

I think you should do overhead flows before starting the APU, to test the fire warnings first.

+D Alexander I followed the flow that Majestic provided. There is the option of powering up the APU or the GPU, but either comes before the overhead flows. So does the apu have infinite fuel or is it connected to the apu and why would you it want it or a gpu
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 4 жыл бұрын
There is no infinite fuel. The GPU doesnt use fuel from the aircraft, and at most major airports doesnt use fuel at all (it's just a generator) the APU provides power to the aircraft when there is no ground power (GPU) or Engine power available. It also provides pressurized air to assist in starting the engines. Usually the APU is started around 15 minutes before pushback to conserve fuel and is usually started shortly after landing depending on the company SOP. Does that answer your question well enough or did I miss the mark?
@barrett2724

Captain_Mac no that’s is awesome and I have a question on how the pitch of the propellor such as on a Baron 58 affects its performance hope it isn’t a dum question
@CaptainMac
@CaptainMac 4 жыл бұрын
@@barrett2724 not a dumb question at all. There are 2 types of peopellers...fixed pitch (like on a cessna 172) and constant speed (like on the Baron or Q400). On a fixed pitch propeller you can adjust the speed of the propeller by moving the throttle...on a constant speed propeller is just what it sounds like...you set the RPMs and they stay constant and you adjust the pitch of the propeller to increase its "bite" on the air and get more thrust. I was thinking of doing a video on some basics of flight stuff which would include stuff like that...would a video like that be helpful and of interest to you? Did I answer your question?

If your using the pro version you can set it to Cold and dark on next startup in the majestic control panel otherwise shut down the aircraft and save the flight.

@CaptainMac

lethalbeef did you crash? I don't remember off the top of my head. It's either an exit hold option in the fmc or you move the next waypoint into the current waypoint slot on the fmc.

That's an excellent goal Keithrelle. I know a few pilots who fly for airlines. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll see if I can get some answers for you. How old are you?
