When they strike upon a quality that makes their music appealing to a wide variety of people, and they become "mainstream," it's up to the artist whether they continue to make music the way they always have, or make their music based on what they think makes it successful. It has everything to do with the integrity of the artist, and nothing to do with the number of fans. The fans test the artists' integrity.

Well the thing is, once any artist reaches the mainstream they usually sell out and nor me or anyone else can account for that artist's choice to do so. That is why people worry about it: because then that artist's style will be ruined and there will be less good music to look forward to. If that artist can stay popular without changing him or herself then great, I have no issue with it.
