I happened to be watching before that hexagon final and it was bizarre she kept having events eliminate one person including a race at 3 people that didn't eliminate anyone. Never seen anything like that before.

She was running a custom game. The latest update brought the minimum player count to 10 (eventually will be changed to 2) so they updated the round selection algorithm in customs to artificially extend it as long as possible so it doesn't end too quickly in case of small player numbers. It really shouldn't do something like that if the lobby reached 40-60, but I guess the devs didn't make it account for differentiation.
