Gohan calling Buu a slur and then getting bodied immediately is the funniest shit ever
@vadosu452113 күн бұрын
I personally thought it was the perfect example of Gohan's character getting completely destroyed by the writing. First off, Gohan would never use a slur against any of his enemies. It was completely out of character. Second, he made the dumb decision of letting Gotenks fight Buu instead of finishing the job himself, showing that he learned NOTHING from his fight with Cell. Yes it's funny if you dislike Gohan or not care about him much, but I did like him before and was hoping for him to get a good redemption arc after he neglected his training, but what we got instead is just a huge slap in the face to anyone who ever cared about this character and the ending of the Cell arc.

My favorite thing about this arc is that it’s toriyama asking the question “what is dragon ball without Goku?” And the answer he came to as a writer was that it isn’t dragon ball. Goku is looking to the next generation to save the day and so is Tori. He wanted to find a way to have gohan or the kids take the protagonist role, but he failed to write it in a way that felt satisfying, same as how gohan fails. So Toriyama decided right then and there that he cannot write Dragon Ball without Goku. It’s an extremely interesting study of a writer scrambling to find what the core of his series is.

Toriyama can write dragon ball without Goku, he did it in the beginning of the Saiyan arc, Namek arc and a good portion of the cell arc and the story is still very good without Goku. I feel like Goku is a symbol of hope that no other character in Dragon Ball has, which is why he struggled to write an ending without Goku
@MisterGuy2516 күн бұрын
@@erickparedeshernandez9829Yeah but in the Saiyan, Namek and Android Saga Goku is still around or on the way. His presence on the story is still felt because we’re anticipating him to save the day. I can't help but wonder how much studio interference played a role. Goku was an international icon and Dragon Ball was already a billion dollar franchise by the start of the Buu Saga in late 1993. I personally love Gohan based entirely on his pre-Buu story and think he could have held the franchise together if it transitioned to more "slice of life" like it did with the Great Saiyaman stuff, but when your options are kill off Superman to give the franchise to Robin and only make a million dollars OR keep Superman alive and relegate Robin to a midcard slot and make a billion dollars on name recognition alone, I feel like Toriyama might have felt the same pressure he got from the Android Saga to change things up a bit for the sake of business.

The thing i hate about this saga is how characters disappear throughout it first piccolo & krillin who turned into stones in one shot. 18 being yet another candy in super buu's stomach. Vegeta in hell. Gohan in another universe. Piccolo being a babysitter. Goten & Trunks being absolute failures yet forced into the spotlight to kill time. Goku being missing in the realm of the dead. All of them are missing each other constantly unlike in cell. Where characters split to fulfil different objectives instead of simply not progressing at all. As someone who always prefered the earlier, more gag-oriented Dragon Ball over Z, (particularly the first 4 arcs) the Majin Buu arc always had a special place in my heart, since it was somewhat of a return to basics. Sure, at the end of the day it was still yet another arc about defeating some new strong guy, but there's so much more levity and more comedic moments in this compared to all the previous arcs, like all of Mr. Satan's antics, the Gotenks vs Super Buu fight, Majin Buu himself etc. Although honestly, during my most recent reading of it, the whole arc kinda felt like Toriyama was sick of writing serious Shonen manga and desperately wanted to return to just writing silly gag manga. Then again, with how the Majin Buu arc turned out, i don't it at all lul.

And Buu's setting up also mirrors that of King Piccolo, as a mystical, mythical entity of surpassing power and that even the gods feared. Having it start on a tournament that starts really promising, but eventually turns sour is a nice callback to the fact that when the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai ended, Piccolo showed himself for the first time.
@SB-to5lx13 күн бұрын
Also this storyline wasn't connected to anything before it in all of Dragon Ball. Frieza connected to the Saiyans and Cell connected to the Red Ribbon army. While Majin Buu came out of nowhere which showed Toriyama was struggling for ideas but fortunately now even Buu and the Majin theme has become a major idea unto itself in the wider Dragon Ball multiverse, Actually, I guess it could tie back into the demon stuff with Piccolo and his father with the magic and sorcery but that is thematic and it doesn't connect in any other way in the plot. Anyway, this man was a true creative genius and I hope everyone appreciates him now and forever.

The clone wars show honestly kind of carried a lot of the prequel era content. That and the comics. I do have a problem with how people say that the show "fixed" Anakin in the movies retroactively, because I don't think it did at all. They feel like 2 completely different characters with TCW show version being better written. The prequel version still feels better in sone ways though; like they captured his awkwardness and instability pretty well imo, especially at certain points in AOTC and ROTS. One scene that always comes to mind for me is when he goes from seeming lucid and understanding why Obi wan does the things he's doing to just kind of exploding with anger and frustration about it like 5 seconds later; I feel like it really captured the turmoil and instability. Feel bad for Christensen and Portman, though; great actors screwed by not exactly great dialogue. And padme is just a terrible character (exacerbated by TCW imo); leia is superior in every way. Although padme does kind of serve to highlight the failures of neoliberalism and waiting for individual action instead of fighting for systemic change, so maybe she actually is a good character.

Great video to sum up that arc. Despite so many inconsistencies from Toriyama, I still loved it. However, I think the biggest crime would have to have been Gohans character development, I think its pretty fitting for him to truly realize by the end of this arc how important it was to train, how his arrogance and overconfidence became his biggest weakness, and he now lacked the power to protect the ones he loved because he ignored his potential... Then to pretty much throw all of that development into the trash when he doesn't train for another 10 years since the start of Super when confronted with Beerus, and then yet again another 10 months of not training when confronted with Frieza. I started to believe Toriyama wanted him to never learn at that point.

I agree with his regression in Super. There's also something interesting I noticed in the manga: it turns out that Gohan becoming arrogant against Super Buu was only in the anime; he doesn't get arrogant at all in the manga. It was only his lack of battle instinct that got him in trouble because he inadvertently allowed Buu to absorb Gotenks. The more you know!

I think, for me, the thematic shift was when goku woke up and it to the look out. After Goku died, the story revolved heavily on Gohan. we look through every moment through Gohan. Once Gohan was finally out of the picture we get to feel like were back at square one like Goku felt. were back too Goku. seeing how he wasnt built for this either. It felt like it made sense that it wasn't the next generation, not fusion, not just one fighter against the other. It was everyone who beat the foes. It's corny but I think thats how akira thought some where through the arc is how he will subvert the story to end it off. For me, that ending was immensely satisfying.

7:00 I’d honestly argue that Goten *does* have a personality due to how innocent and naive he is, to the point where he pairs perfectly with Trunks due to him taking everything Trunks says at face value. Like with Trunks claiming that Mai is his girlfriend in Battle of Gods. It’s just that the series unfortunately doesn’t really give Goten anything to do on his own due to treating him and Trunks as a pair, instead of as his own character. Which isn’t so much of a problem with Trunks when we already have Future Trunks to show a more developed and fleshed out version of the character, but for the second son of Goku, Goten gets basically nothing. Who knows, with the two being a lot older now with Superhero, hopefully Goten will be able to come more into his own instead of being tossed to the wayside.

From what I've heard, the reason the first 6 seasons of DBZ (Freeza and Cell arcs) were better is because of the editor. He would keep Toriyama in line with good criticism and advice. Then, the editor thought Toriyama should have learnt enough about storytelling, so he stopped advising Toriyama.
@LowkeyRJ.11 күн бұрын
Disagree. Since his editor has forced toriyama to make decision that would have been expanded on. But if you start after the 3 year time skip, then it's 2 weeks from the time 19 and 20 first make their scene and 17 and 18 are activated to the end of the cell games. Because it was mentioned, Dragonball was never intended to end after Cell, or Freezer or Piccolo JR and whatever other points people have been discussing for ages, it's a very popular myth/misconception. I get why people get that impression, most arcs are rather self-contained and could have easily served as a finale arc. But I would argue that this comes down more to how Toriyama wrote. What is true that he never intentioned Dragonball to become as long and big as he did. But he also never had a specific ending point in mind. And since he relied so much on writing stuff as he went and didn't exactly know when it would end, he made sure he could have ended it a multiple points, but never fully intentional. The Buu arc being the final arc is actually one of the reasons why it's so different and all over the place. Toriyama finally had an ending point and was no longer bound by his editors and stuff, so he went full balls to the walls and just poured every idea he has left into the story. Also, while I'm not the biggest fan of the old generation having to come back to save the day too, I would argue that the final fight and how they finally defeat Buu expresses the Z fighters finally putting all their differences aside and working together as a team, rather than trying to put all their faith and responsibility onto one guy. The arms race between Buu and the Z warriors is a big theme during the whole arc, as mentioned in the video. The new generations tried, but ultimately wasn't ready. Goku and Vegeta come back, but they also had to put their differences aside and rely on new tactics (fusion) to stand a chance. They try to beat Buu the old-fashioned way in the final fight, but fail once again, so they have to come together to finally put him down. Sure, it was Goku who delivered the killing blow, but Vegeta came up with the Plan and distracted Buu, Mr. Satan talked some sense into human ity and distracted Buu, Buus good half distracted is evil half, Gohan, Goten and Trunks and all the others contributed their energy, the Namekians contributed their magic balls, I still like it as a thematic ending.

11:02 I've always thought of the transformation into Super Buu like a business merger. All of Buu's hatred and wrath got to restructure the new, combined business so that it could stay in charge while retaining access to the Grand Supreme Kai's ability to think thoughts more complicated than "ooga wooga wooga". Gray Buu was a Buu of "wrath" more than "evil", which could explain why he's different than Kid Buu. Gray Buu keeps the look and general intelligence gained from Grand Supreme Kai, and after absorbing Fat Buu, he delegates all of GSK back to Fat Buu so he can get back to his OG outfit and his OG evil self. So once you remove Fat Buu, Kid Buu is all that's left. Idk, I love this saga too and I think about it way too much.

I don’t think people understand how fundamentally a problem the power creep in DBZ represents to being able to easily write a narrative driven combat story that doesn’t use boatloads of plot contrivances. For example this comes up in what I like to call “Alexander’s sword” problem solving, in DnD you can’t let your players be stronger than the walls of the dungeon they are in. Because every dungeon adventure would just them be mining into the dungeon from the top or straight through the walls every single time. Power allows for a meta playstyle to emerge that kind of ruins your ability to tell diverse stories. Because literally every villain after Frieza can literally blow up a planet. He has to make up myriad reasons why the villains don’t just do that anyways. The Dragonballs also present a similar problem as it serves as an “Alexander’s sword” to a collection of knots for your characters to work through.

Buu arc was peak up till the end of majin vegeta. 1 of the best stretches in shounen
@qinlongfei15 күн бұрын
I remember reading a Chinese article that Majin Buu arc ended up the way it was because Toriyama was trying to capture the slowly slipping popularity of DBZ when it was being published by Shounen Jump. The whole Tenkaichi Budokai, and Goku VS Vegeta fight both happened because these was what previously exploded in popularity (which both failed here in this arc), same goes for creating both Gotenks and Vegeto (which actually did give the series a brief boost in popularity that it jumped to #1 most popular publishing story at the time). If that was true, then Buu Arc truly was better than people give it credit for. I actually liked Fat Buu as a villain since he's so different from typical egomaniac 'I want to destroy the world to prove I'm the strongest' villain DBZ always had. And Gohan failing to properly balance his Saiyan heritage with his Earthling heritage is a much better outcome than all the salty Gohan fanboys making fanfiction/fancomics where he becomes the strongest galaxy harem king since it shows just because you have the potential, it doesn't mean you fully fulfill it (my favorite version of Gohan is still the one from fancomic Dragon Ball Multiverse where he did eventually balance both of his two sides though, but more as a dedicated family man than the strongest galaxy harem king his salty fanboys trying to mutate him into). And giving Mr. Satan more personality to show he is a hero in his own way in spite of being a weak (relatively... I think he's at least on Captain America's power level if he's in Marvel) human is genuinely a good way to take his character. Overall, Buu Arc had major problems just like Freeza and Android (which people tend to ignore), but when it does things well, it still knocked the ball out of the park.
@blazing_cactus15 күн бұрын
@@qinlongfei Great points! I’m not a fan of the galaxy harem king shtick either man, that’s cringe and a half. It’s like whenever people write Pokemon fanfiction and make Ash into the best trainer in the world that makes no mistakes and evolves all his Pokemon. And the Captain America power scaling hilarious, albeit potentially accurate lmao
@qinlongfei14 күн бұрын
@@blazing_cactus My Captain America scaling of Mr. Satan mostly comes from anime, which elaborated both his strength and his durability where he was shown to be able to pull multiple buses behind him, and when Cell send him fly right into a mountain, he walked away like he snubbed his toe. So judging by his anime iteration, I think I'm low balling Mr. Satan's power level comparing him to Captain America. I think people consider Mr. Satan weak because he was almost killed by a random punk with a gun in Buu Arc. But then Dragon Ball always had inconsistency when it comes to how bullet proof a character is. Since even Krillin in Super was hurt by a random bullet. Who should have easily been bullet proof. Pretty sure he's still physically stronger than Aquaman at that point even with him slacking off on his training, and Aquaman is already bullet proof.

Cell is the obvious end point on a narrative level. He's all the heros dna, plus frieza and is made by the red ribbon army. Cell is basically the dragon ball universe in a single person. @RealJuiceWrld10 күн бұрын
“Naïve misunderstanding of Gohan’s character” ok I guess it’s naïve then to be taken aback when a character who’s race is genetically coded to fight, who was raised by multiple martial artists, who hated ChiChi’s tutoring, who actively wanted to participate in the fight vs the Saiyans and Freiza decides that he no longer likes fighting MID battle with Cell. No seriously. There was no foreshadowing, no hints, no developments prior to the panel in the cell saga when Gohan decides he no longer wants to cause harm to others. Toriyama pulled it out of thin air, same as he pulled Goku’s kamehameha not killing Cell out of thin air. You don’t have to defend bad writing.
@blazing_cactus10 күн бұрын
It's true that Gohan's a Saiyan, but he's also human. He was raised by martial artists, but that doesn't mean he ever liked fighting. Chi-Chi's tutoring was played up in the anime to be harsher than it was in the manga, and there's nothing in the canon material that says Gohan ever hated the idea of becoming a scholar; quite the opposite, actually. He participated in the Saiyan invasion and the conflict on Namek because he felt that it was his duty to contribute his strength to the cause, not because he enjoyed it. For Namek especially, he felt responsible for Piccolo's death and wanted to help bring him back to life. Gohan's pacifism was implied all throughout his training in the Room of Spirit and Time where he constantly struggled to get angry enough to transform without being explicitly provoked; it's true that it wasn't built up to for all of Z, but Gohan is a maturing kid whose views on the world inevitably change. And his pacifism isn't even a permanent characteristic; it's very clearly presented as a flaw that Android 16 points out so that he can overcome it through his attainment of SSJ2, so I'm not sure what more build up for his temporary pacifism phase would add to Gohan's character arc.

Actually I think if the torch-passing had worked better I think it would have done nothing but step on the toes of the triumph that was Gohan's arc in the Cell saga. I think Toriyama had his wits about him enough to know that, and had something better in mind. I really liked the way the Buu saga cemented Goku's realization that he has to step aside and stop coming to the rescue. He couldn't have come to that realization if he hadn't actually stepped in for the final victory. If he had instead been watching on the sidelines as Gohan achieved the victory he had been training for, then Goku would never have had any reason to make such a difficult and shocking choice as to saying goodbye before everyone else was really truly ready. That choice, and the feeling of unpreparedness that comes with seeing your elders pass on before you think you're ready is a far deeper and more meaningful theme than anything they could had accomplished using the simple "Gohan train=Gohan win" formula. I humbly but confidently reject your critique, though I thank you for making it because I honestly never thought to analyze it this deep until you brought me here. I love this saga, and I love this show. Thanks for the awesome breakdowns as always.

@blazing_cactus now you got me really thinking though, and honestly, I think Goku's final victory with the Spirit bomb might be the single most important part of the entire series. It is the ultimate fulfillment of his Saiyan destiny, the very reason he was sent to Earth. After unknowingly rejecting his mission to conquer Earth and all its inhabitants, he goes on to (in very Saiyan fashion) assemble his oligarchy--the Z Fighters--establish his bloodline, and in finally succeeding an ultimate worldwide Spirit bomb, he symbolically conquers the planet. Then to cement his absolutely perfect characterisation, he does the least Saiyan thing possible. He gives it all up. He walks away and leaves the Earth to care for itself. I have no doubt at all that Toriyama had all of this worked out when he brought the series to a close with the end of the Buu saga. The passing of the torch was never the real theme, it was the STRUGGLE TO PASS the torch. And it was beautiful in such a real world way.
