Adobe are launching some major updates for photography applications. I think these are the most significant updates they've put out in the last 10 years. They all hinge around the new camera RAW calibration profile known as Adobe Color.
A camera RAW calibration profile is the first step in rendering a camera raw image before you begin to edit. Lets look at how this will improve not only your image quality, but also speeding up your workflow allowing you to get better results in Adobe Lightroom FAST!

Adobe subscription only model pushes me towards C1 more than any other aspect. When I pay my money for some product I'd like to call it mine after purchase. The last standalone version of LR of December 2017 that I have doesn't update anymore. No new cameras, no any other stuff. Awesome! I bought LR since version 4 and was ready to keep it updated, but only when it would be necessary for me personally and not because of adobe's time bomb under my catalog. Anyway, it makes the choice of a new camera much easier - Fuji X-T2 is supported and X-H1 isn't. Nice! Thank you, Ted

FINALLY. I dropped the CC and thought I was going to switch to Capture One because of its color science, but some functions just weren't as intuitive as Lightroom, and the cropping/angle tool drove me nuts. I'll re-download Lightroom later and figure out if it's better before I make a purchase. Thanks for the great news!

Good to see they are trying to respond to c1 wave, its probably not going to make me switch back but hey. However color is only one part. The other one, for me much bigger, is rendering of fine details. Where LR created mess and weird transitions c1 created very nice pattern and smooth transition, looking very natural. It was surprising how much detail is in the image.

I just updated my Adobe apps and so far I like it. I have not worked much with it just yet. I like the profiles and the "opacity" slider on the arttistic profiles, wish every profile had that. After watching your comparison video with the native color profiles in Adobe Lightroom and Capture One, I have been contemplating moving to Capture One. For now though, it seems Adobe has definitely felt the pressure of competition (always a good market force) and they have responded accordingly. I will stay with Adobe for now.

The profiles I created for my Canon and Sony cameras with ColorChecker are still more accurate, but the new Adobe defaults do appear to be better than the previous. I would still recommend building your own profiles over using the Adobe profiles.

Calibration profiles have been with us for a while now, just a bit hidden away. They were however mainly camera manufacturer related, so good to see creative options. Fuji camera profiles are a big deal for many Fuji shooters and seeing the profiles in up top in classic and lightroom mobile is big, just wish they allowed a select all feature and sync across all selected images in lightroom mobile. I think many people are going to use the camera manufacture profile as they closely represent what you had seen on your lcd while shooting. Once adobe improves export features in lightroom mobile, that will be a massive step. I want to work on powerful 15” ipad pros in future, no more laptops and wacoms.

The rearrangement of the profiles and the dehaze slider is awesome. Up until now I always had to go to the bottom first, set my color profile, use the dehazer and then go up to the basic module. What I find disturbing though: Did anyone besides me realize, that the default setting for sharpening is now 40 and not 25 anymore? For my taste 40 is way to high, I usually never go higher than 35...

Good views on both major raw editors. Digital cameras are designed by color scientists to deliver an image the way you think you saw it. Raw editors have to take up on that and produce a default colour that represents more or less what the color scientists idea of what the total over look is aiming for. Ansel Adams on the other hand was always trying to add a signature by interpretation of his negatives in a way that one did not see in the original scene. That is what profiles are for. Badly named however as they are color style presets which is too long to have in a button label.

I wander if someone had problems with Lightroom and VSCO? I upgraded to the new version and then I left upgrading the Profiles and nothing happened. It just kept upgrading for an hour! I had to force quit the application because I couldn't do anything. Now I can see on the new Profile bar on the right an alert with Fuji 400... ! Profile missing. ? I can still select my presets from VSCO as normal on the left but I wander if something is missing?

Thank God they're finally working on the color interface... It was a pain working with the profile interface, and the Adobe profile would always blow out highlights to hell, forcing me to use the camera neutral option... And the worst part is you can't access it through the library view, you have to go to Develop, scroll down to the calibration and set that, then select all the images from your new import, and paste attributes. It used to confuse me a lot at first.

Hi Ted, did Adobe give you any insight into reasons behind the change made to the sharpening Amount Slider default? Any raw processor such as Lightroom actually uses a demosaicing algorithm to display the raw file on screen, not a calibration profile. And the Lightroom demosaic algorithm is still inferior to CapOne Pro, Iridient, and the multiple choice of algorithms in Raw Therapee. It's that demosaic algorithm that's old and needs a major overhaul. The 'calibration profile' you refer to is just a default bunch of contrast, recovery and saturation settings that Adobe feel make your images look good - and they are applied behind the scenes - hence the slider values that control those criteria are all zeroed. If you think back to Lr v2 (pv2010 or earlier) Lr added a medium contrast tone curve and +50 brightness, +25 contrast and +5 blacks, and these adjustments were visible on the sliders. But since pv2012 these 'automatic adjustments' have been buried so the user cannot see them. What annoys me is that Adobe do not give the user an option to view a direct neutral rendering of the raw file - unlike some of the more up to date raw processors. And anyone thinking that such a 'neutral' view isn't valuable is, frankly, a fool. I was hoping for a major upgrade to the whole input sharpening module, to bring it more in line with that of Raw Therapee - which let's not forget, is free across all platforms Ted. Adobe will always be at the very top of imaging software with Photoshop, but if they want to raise their game with Lightroom they need to drop the arrogance, get serious, and actually look at what the competition is producing. It's still the best D.A.M system out there, and has the best print output management, but it's trying to be a complete image processor, which is silly because it's nowhere close to the capabilities of Photoshop. All this new profile malarkey is basically CLUTs, and they are always better deployed in a masking and pixel blending environment - i.e. Photoshop.
@gavinwade349

I am confused. I thought that raw files could be read without a calibration profile. However they would just be low contrast. When I open files in affinity photo they appear low contrast and I am given the option to apply a tone curve with the develop assistant (is that a calibration profile?). When I apply a tone curve the picture looks normal. Could someone explain?

Hi, when you do your review please check the Camera / Manufacturer profiles. Cameras are getting better and better with color. For Nikon, the D850 is a significant jump in that regard. I don't know whey the camera vendors don't work with Adobe, as Hasselblad does. Adobe premature insistence in DNG (that can't capture the nuances and the sensor and forces vendors to reveal more than they want) it's no longer an issue. That way the vendors could focus on providing the best image quality and Adobe could work on all the rest of the software.
@theartofphotography

Hasselblad actually uses an embedded profile - it actually bypasses adobe color. It looks as great as it always has. In fact you can’t use adobe color with it.

great stuff for Adobe Lr users. About time. Guess they are listening with many dropping Lr/Ps in their workflow and going to Cap1 or On1. Gotta always try and innovate and stay ahead of the competition and follow the Kano model. What is a delighter (more than expected) today becomes the expected/standard in the future and you have to keep 1 step ahead to keep your customers happy

Always changed it to Camera Neutral and probably still will. The flatter the better, as a starting point. Also, in certain scenes with strong neon lights or fluorescents, no other profile will display them correctly. Good thing they're keeping the legacy stuff. I'd be more interested in a new process version... although there's nothing wrong with the current one. EDIT: Adobe Neutral (the new one) is much better than the previous Camera Neutral. Great! :)

Thanks for the heads up as usual Ted! I sure hope that this update does 2.5 things speed things up or at least not slow them down and ... help with a true realistic result when merging (stitching) panorama images. 360 photos still suffer the most in this area and PTGUI does a great job for the most part, but when you shoot 4 scenes and each has to blend with a white balance that has to include massive colour changes, it's really hard. Here's to hoping!

This is great news. I switched to C1 a few years ago (Adobe's poor handling of Fuji files was the catalyst then). I still use PS though, so I'll certainly be giving LR another go. I think C1 is great and means I don't need to move into PS very often (which I had to do a lot when I used to use LR), but still, LR has some nice things about it that C1 doesn't, especially when wanting to make very quick edits.
