One of my favorite meals is fried chicken, mac and cheese, cornbread, and watermelon. It is the sweetness of the watermelon combined with the saltiness of the chicken that hits just right for me. Now, this is something I occasionally eat during the summer. However, I would be greatly offended if a white person served this same meal combination to me, and i dont know any other black people that eat the combination together. Furthermore, watermelon is off-season in February. The price has doubled from the summer, and i imagine it is very bitter. What white people need to do is just stay away from trying to identify a food (because there is none) that black people eat during black history month. The truth of the matter is that no matter what they come up with, it is going to come across as offensive. Why? Because black people are not monolithic. When we were brought over to this country from Africa, we lost our African traditions and adopted the American way of eating. As slaves and out of necessity, sure we ate the parts of the pig and cow that was thrown out by massa, but most black people have never had chitterlings, pigs feet, chicken feet, etc. What we eat is really no different from white people eat. Fried chicken is and always will be offensive to black people because it is a stereotype and not factual.
