I passed my instrument checkride in October. The only note from the examiner afterwards was, “Garmin will get you”. Now, he had a bunch of reasons to support this statement, and this was one of them. Luckily, I remembered to check the 430W and actually pointed to it to confirm it had flipped like it was suppose to. It had bitten me before on practice approaches. This video is an excellent reminder.

You didn't mention here--BOTH of the needles on the OBS have their ORANGE FLAGS ON, which means you shouldn't be paying attention to them anyway. That should be completely fundamental to any IFR flying. If a needle is flagged, ignore it.

Yep I remembered the CDI soft key on my IFR Checkride. It’s on most IFR Checklist’s. ForeFlight has 1 Also in the checklist sections & u can set it to Audibly read it off as u fly !

430 will switch to VLOC when you are joining the leg immediately prior to the FAF AND the localizer frequency is correct in the active NAV radio. In some cases you may want to monitor the glide slope indication earlier than that in which case - push the vloc manually.

Yeah. When you load the approach, the GPS loads the localizer frequency into the STANDBY. The pilot has to flip it to the active. Also, when the GPS does the determination of whether to switch to VLOC (which is like 2 nm from the FAF) you must be more or less centered on the course, and you have to be going within like 45 degrees of the proper course; approaching it at 90 degrees won't trigger the switch. ALSO also--the above is the behavior by default, but it can be turned off in the menus. So if you're used to depending on that setting, make sure to check it if you're flying an airplane that other people fly.

@@mrishka7286 KHWO, :( we have CR almost every month and a half because they don't come often to our airport, for CR execpt CFI cost you ~1100$ and for CFI ~1600$

I’ve modified the CRAP checklist. This is what I’ve used after my approach plate brief. C-CDI R-RAIM VLOC or GPS if GPS what type of GPS APP and verify LPV LP+V or LNAV-important! A-Autopilot preselect -APR Mode P-POWER SET (know your power settings)

Good video. I have never trusted it to switch for me. Always just press vloc myself for this reason.

To get ur IFR done in North America, the most important thing is to master ur Garmin430 530

I am assuming in real life outside the Sim the flags will show on the localizer

So if the approach such as the ILS-30 @Jefferson City, MO uses a (LOM) as the IAF, you can fly to it via the GPS. If you still had a working ADF you can use that to go to the IAF. So I’m guessing you must fly outbound on the GPS, start your procedure turn as published and the switch to the VLOC to intercept the localizer inbound? If you fly outbound on the localizer then there is reverse sensing and a very sensitive CDI. I would think the examiner would allow you to switch to VLOC as you are starting the procedure turn. Am I wrong?

During my training we switched to vloc a bit before crossing the IAF going outbound. It is sensitive but can still be referred to.
